Tips to manage PCOD with food

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), a condition when your ovaries release immature eggs, which eventually turn into cysts. Irregular periods, painful menstrual cramps, facial hair and acne breakouts are some of the common symptoms of PCOD. Treatment includes taking birth control pills to regularise periods and anti-diabetic medications. Though there is no way out of this disease, but PCOD treatment along with strict diet habits can help in managing the disease. Here are a few small changes you can bring to your diet to overcome the severeness of PCOD.

2/7

Avoid red meat

If you are suffering from PCOD, try to avoid red meat like beef, pork and mutton. Not only are they high in cholesterol, but also aggravate the existing hormonal imbalance.

3/7

Bye-bye to dairy

IGF-1, a hormone which spikes the insulin level is found in dairy. Thus, consuming dairy products can mess up the blood sugar level, which may worsen the symptoms of PCOD.

4/7

Diabetic Diet

Women suffering from PCOD are prone to diabetes. Thus, experts recommend a diabetic diet full of fibres and limited processed food to patients with PCOD. Say no to sugar.

Sugary food and sweeteners act as poison if you are suffering from PCOD. Avoid sweets at all cost! One can have fruits and dark chocolate instead, to overcome the sugar cravings.

5/7

Drink more, eat less

Most of the PCOD patients experience water retention. To solve that, it is suggested to keep drinking lots and lots of water throughout the day and stick to smaller, frequent meals. It will help in flushing out toxins and will also keep a check on weight.

6/7

Nuts and seeds

Including seeds and herbs like methi dana, flax seed, hazelnut, almonds, pine nuts and sesame seeds in your diet can help you lose weight and keep your PCOD in check as these are a great source of healthy and good fats. Women with PCOD should have a trail mix of nuts in controlled portions on a daily basis.

7/7

Lean protein

Lean proteins are a must while chalking out a PCOD diet. Protein stimulates metabolism and also plays a key role in the synthesis of hormones such as oestrogen and insulin. Including chicken, egg whites, tuna, curd, skimmed milk and salmon to your diet can help you manage symptoms of PCOD like a breeze.
