How to add oats to Indian meals?

Oats, as a rich source of fiber and other nutrients, are often looked at as a breakfast delight. But, have you ever thought of adding it to your desi Indian meals? If not, then here are some cues. These dishes are easy to digest and can keep you feeling full for longer, making them great for weight management. Packed with essential nutrients like magnesium, iron, protein, and antioxidants, oats also boost energy, improve gut health, and support better digestion. Take a look at these eight Indian dishes one can make with oats.

Oats Khichdi


It is a light and comforting one-pot dish using oats, moong dal or toor dal, seasonal vegetables like peas, carrots, aand cauliflower, and simple spices like turmeric and salt. The tempering of ghee, cumin seeds, and hing adds an edge.

Oats Tikki


Combine chopped and blanched veggies of your choice and add rolled oats to it as a combining agent. Top it with salt and pepper, shape into tikkis and then shallow fry on a tawa. It goes well with paratha and salad on the side.

Oats Paratha


To make this, simply combine multi grain atta and blended oats powder and knead a dough. Roll out parathas and cook on a tawa using ghee or oil. Enjoy with curd and pickle.

Oats Upma

This is a wholesome breakfast where oats are cooked with onions, veggies like carrots, capsicums, tomatoes, beans, and mustard seeds, curry leaves and roasted nuts which together makes for a light, savory meal. Simply make a tempering of oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves and chilli, saute the veggies and onions together and then add rolled oats and cook until the raw smell disappears, later add salt and spices and water. Once the water is absorbed, garnish with coriander leaves and enjoy.

Oats Idli


To make this idli, you need to combine roasted oats with semolina, curd, and add a tadka of oil, curry leaves, and mustard seeds to it. Pour in the mould, steam, and serve hot with sambar and chutney.

Oats Dosa


This makes for a crispy delight and to make it, you need to combine powdered oats, rice flour, and curd to make a batter. Pour on dosa tawa to make thin and crispy dosa and enjoy.

Oats Chilla


It is a protein-rich savory pancake made with oats, besan, coriander, onions, and spices like turmeric, salt, pepper, and chilli powder. It is best served with green chutney.

It is a nutritious twist on the South Indian classic, where oats replace rice to make a creamy, peppery pongal. To make it, you need rolled oats, moong dal, water, ghee, cumin, black pepper, ginger, green chilli, curry leaves, turmeric, salt, and roasted cashews.
