Interesting sattu snacks to try

Sattu, also known as poor man's protein, is made by roasting and grinding Bengal gram (roasted chana or chickpeas). It is rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, making it highly nutritious. According to a study titled “Sattu–Its Effects on Digestive Problems in Summer,” high fiber content in sattu promotes digestion, regulates bowel movements, reduces gas, acidity, and constipation, and cleanses the colon. Studies have found that it effectively addresses digestive issues, especially in hot climates where it is traditionally consumed. This protein-rich powder is mostly known for making litti, but do you know it can be used to make many more healthy treats? Here are eight savoury snacks that one can make with sattu in 20 minutes at home.

2/9

Sattu Paratha Bite

This makes for a healthy and protein-rich snack dish, where you mix sattu with chopped onions, green chillies, lemon juice, mustard oil, salt, and coriander. Stuff it into whole wheat dough, cook on a hot tawa with ghee, cut into small triangle bites and enjoy with pickle, dip, or chutney.

3/9

Sattu Kachori

This is loved by people of all age groups. To make it, prepare a spiced sattu filling with sattu, ajwain, kalonji, salt, chili, pepper, and oil. Stuff it into small dough discs and deep fry in oil. Serve hot with aloo curry and chai.

4/9

Sattu Chilla

To make this filling snack dish, combine sattu with water, ajwain, chopped onions, green chillies, and spices to form a batter. Spread it like a pancake, cook until golden, and serve with mint coriander chutney.

5/9

Sattu Tikki

This goes really well with chai and chutney. To make it, mix boiled potatoes with sattu, cumin, coriander, and salt, shape into patties and shallow fry in oil or butter. It makes for a crispy, protein-rich, snack that can be converted into chaat with curd and condiments as well.

6/9

Sattu Stuffed Cheela Roll

This is also a healthy option for school tiffin. To make it, you need to make basic besan cheela with besan, curd, turmeric and spices and then fill it with a dry sattu masala filling inside made with mustard oil, sattu, onion, salt, chaat masala, and black salt. Roll it up for a quick, travel-friendly snack.

7/9

Sattu Stuffed Cucumber Bites

This is a hydrating and protein-rich snack. To make it, you need to mix sattu with mustard oil, lemon juice, black salt, and spices and then fill it into scooped cucumber halves for a refreshing, no-cook snack that goes well with lemonade and shakes.

8/9

Sattu Toast

This dish is for all the bread lovers. All you need to do is, spread a thick, spicy sattu mixture on bread slices. Toast on a pan with butter or ghee until crisp. For the mixture, use curd along with sattu, ajwain, black pepper, red chili flakes, and some chaat masala. It is a desi upgrade to your regular toast that goes well with masala chai.

9/9

Sattu Cutlets

To make this healthy snack, combine sattu with mashed sweet potato, boiled corn or chopped onion, carrot, and peas. Shape the mixture into cutlets, and shallow fry with a coating of breadcrumbs. It makes for a crunchy outside, soft inside delight that can be enjoyed with coriander chutney.
