Benefits of eating Panjiri

Come winter, and the North Indian homes start chopping nuts, roast edible gum, and different types of flours in ghee to make a comforting snack called Panjiri. Traditionally, it is consumed in winters to keep the body warm and provide it with all essential nutrients. It is said that use of ingredients like ghee, almonds, and whole wheat allows the body to produce more heat and keep the body warm during extreme cold. It is rich in calories, which gives energy during gloomy days and also the use of nuts as a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats helps boost the immune system. Take a look at eight types of panjiri one can try at home this winter season.

Traditional Atta Panjiri



To make this panjiri, roast whole wheat flour in ghee, until it turns golden brown. In a separate pan, roast chopped nuts like almonds, peanuts, walnuts and add to the atta mixture along with powdered jaggery or sugar. Store it in an air tight container and enjoy with warm milk.

Dhania Panjiri

As the name suggests, it is made with roasted and powdered coriander seds and is said to be Lord Krishna's favourite too. All you need to do is, dry roast the coriander seeds, then blend into a powder and saute it in ghee and once it cools down slightly, add roasted coconut, makhana, almonds, walnuts, and pistachios along with powdered jaggery or sugar.

Gond Panjiri


For this panjiri, roast edible gum in ghee and then blend it into a powder. In the same pan roast whole wheat flour with ghee and once it cools down, add powdered gond along with fried nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pistachios, and a pinch of cardamom powder. Also, add powdered sugar or jaggery. Store it in an air tight container and enjoy it with warm milk in the morning.

Oats and Dry Fruit Panjiri


This is a flour-free panjiri packed with almonds, cashews, pistachios, and seeds, which is perfect for quick winter nutrition. Roast the seeds, nuts, and oats in ghee and to it add powdered sugar or jaggery. Once done, store in a jar and use for munching.

Besan Panjiri


As the name suggests, it is made with gram flour and warming spices like cinnamon, cardamom and nuts. All you need to do is, roast besan in ghee and add the powdered spices and chopped roasted nuts along with powdered sugar or jaggery and enjoy. It is easy to digest and supports metabolism and can be added to kids' daily diet.

Makhana Panjiri

This one is made with ghee-roasted makhana to which roasted edible gum powder, and nuts like almonds, cashews, and walnuts are added along with powdered sugar or jaggery. This is very light yet nourishing panjiri and is ideal for all age groups.

Ragi Panjiri


This panjiri is rich in calcium and fiber, which supports bone health and keeps you full for longer. To make this panjiri, roast ragi flour in ghee and also roast nuts like almonds, cashews, and walnuts in a different pan. Combine them together, add a pinch of cinnamon and cardamom powder. Also, add powdered sugar or jaggery to taste. Combine well and store in an airtight jar.

Moong Dal Panjiri

This panjiri is protein-rich and wholesome, and helps build strength and stamina during winter. Simply roast moong dal and when it turns aromatic, switch off the flame. Let it cool down and blend into a powder. Now, cook it in ghee and add roasted nuts of your choice. Lastly, add sweetener of your choice (powdered jaggery or sugar) and store in an airtight jar.
