The Shekhar Ravjiani incident

After many episodes of the same nature, another instance of being sold overpriced food has been brought to the attention of the nation. Music composer Shekhar was charged a whopping 1672 rupees for three boiled eggs at a 5-star hotel in Chandigarh, exclaiming, ‘That was an eggxorbitant meal.’ And again, this incident was subject to many humorous memes and retorts which flooded the internet. Instances of hyperinflated food prices

A post on Twitter by actor Rahul Bose created waves across the internet, as he described how he was overcharged for two bananas. The 5-star hotel in Chandigarh charged him 442.5 rupees for two bananas, after which a stream of hilarious remarks followed. Similarly, another Twitter user posted a bill of a hotel in Mumbai charging him 1700 rupees for two boiled eggs.

Hotels and pricing

It is understandable why hotels are slightly pricey. They are a place where you pay not just for a roof over your head, but also for safety, comfort, hospitality, services, food, and overall experience. However, there is a fine line between inflated charges and straight up thievery. Inflated charges can be justified, whereas there is no justification for theft.

Overcharging for food

Of late, a few hotels in India have come under scrutiny for hyperinflated charges that border at theft. For some reason, hotels seem to have a penchant for increasing the price of food to such an extent that it becomes hard to discern between charging for quality and charging to cheat. Many instances in the recent past of people being charged a ridiculous amount of money for simple food has come to attention, and the nation is demanding a justification.
