​Food items that may cause knee pain


Pain and swelling are the most common causes for arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent form of arthriti and it is the one that affects the knee. While doctors suggest various therapies and exercise to cure it, there are plenty of things that can be done on an individual basis,too. In this article we talk about some food items that you should remove from your diet in order to avoid inflammation.

​ Fried and processed foods

As much as we love to treat ourselves with those fries and baked goods, there’s something we must know about them. Mostly all processed and canned foods have trans-fat in them in order to preserve them. Trans fat may cause inflammation and trigger a joint pain. Additionally, these may also contain omega-6 acids which are harmful for our body. Instead of binging on a fried meal, make yourself a healthy salad!

​ Sugar


This may come as sad news for all our readers with a sweet tooth. Sugar and many sugar alternatives have substances that are pro-inflammation. Even simple sugars like that found in candies and toffees may spike blood sugar levels which may accelerate inflammation. In order to save yourself from the pain, we strongly suggest you avoid chocolates, candies, sodas. Instead eat fruits like cherries or take a sip of an unsweetened drink.

​Omega-6 fatty acids


Over consumption of anything is bad. So is the case with the much needed omega-6 fatty acids. Having too much of these may cause unwanted pain in your joints. They are most commonly found in oils such as peanut and corn. On the contrary, omega-3 acids give relief. So eating flax seeds or pumpkin seeds is advisable.

Salt


Too much salt in a diet is bad for us. It has been proven that excess salt intake causes problems such as high blood pressure and water retention. Excess of salt can cause an irritation in your joints and lead to swelling. It is best to add salt to your food in the least possible quantity. You should also pay attention to the ingredients description of packed foods. Sodium intake must be minimized.

​ Milk and dairy products


Many adults complain about digesting milk. Even though milk and various dairy products are high on nutrition, they may, at the same time trigger inflammation. High fat dairy products such as cheese and too much of Ghee are not advisable. Full fat cheese contains such saturated fats that may prove to be problematic not only to heart patients, but those fighting arthritis as well.

​ Alcohol consumption


Adding to the many side effects of alcohol on our health, is that it may cause joint pains also. Cutting down on alcohol has proven to reduce inflammation in many patients. Invest those bucks on a sugar and alcohol free drink instead.

​ Tobacco

Like alcohol, tobacco is the root cause of a lot of social ills. Not just that, it is not good for your joints, too. Smoking has proven to be a major cause for developing Rheumatoid Arthritis in patients. Smoking leads to a genetic reaction that ultimately leads to RA. Hence, in order to have better health and save your joints from such severe conditions, it is best to detoxify your body completely from nicotine.
