Role of Chicken Casserole in ‘The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window’

‘The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window’ is a delight for all the thriller lovers out there. The series is out on Netflix and has garnered a lot of popularity in just a few days. Apart from being a classic psychological thriller, the series also has notes of dark comedy which makes it a complete package in itself.

The protagonist of the series, Anna, is seen baking a Chicken Casserole throughout the series. The casserole plays a bigger role in the thriller series than anyone would expect. If you watch closely, the Chicken Casserole actually gives out a clue that leads Anna to the killer.

Emma’s life is turned upside down after she saw a murder right through her window. Emma saw Lisa aka Chastity who was Neil’s girlfriend being murdered through her window. As she called the police and reached Neil’s house she was surprised to see that things were as normal as they can be. There is no woman in the house, no sign of foul play and Neil even claimed that Lisa is on a flight to Seattle. Read on to know the details and how a casserole helped in identifying the killer! The opening scene

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window opens with Anna preparing a Chicken Casserole dish. Anna mistakenly takes out the dish from the oven without the mittens, pauses for a second and drops the casserole on the floor which crashes right into the floor, creating a mess. With this opening scene, we get an idea about Anna’s state of mind. Anna lost her daughter Elizabeth and has been on meds and therapy since then.

Gift for a neighbour

Anna prepares the exact same dish for her neighbour Neil who moved in across the street with his daughter, Emma. She whips a Chicken Casserole, steps outside to deliver it to her neighbours but this casserole too crashes as Anna passed out in the middle of the road due to ombrophobia (fear or rain). The third dish

The very next day, Anna whips up another Chicken Casserole in a casserole identical to the first two which were broken. This time she successfully carried it to Neil’s house. She stayed over for dinner and even read Emma a bedtime story. As she was about to leave, Neil handed her the casserole after cleaning it. Anna misses the handover and this casserole too comes crashing on the ground. (Image credits- Instagram- foxandfowlvintage)

The final dish

Anna prepares another Chicken Casserole on the occasion of the daughter’s birthday and brings it to her grave. She saw Neil and Emma there who were at the cemetery for Lisa’s funeral. She gave the casserole to them. Two episodes later we see Emma smashing the same casserole on Anna’s head in a bid to kill her.

Spoiler alert- In order to save herself, Anna picked up a broken piece of the casserole and stabs Emma with it. In a nutshell, it can be interpreted that the nine-year-old Emma was the killer all along who was just hiding in plain sight.

That’s how a simple Chicken Casserole dish is woven into the story and even helps Anna protect herself from getting killed.
