According to legends, eating neem leaves at the beginning of new year is a deeply symbolic. It is believed that the bitterness of neem, when mixed with sweetness of jaggery, they together help present the idea that life is a mix of different experiences—joy, sorrow, success, and challenges. Hence, starting the year with this combination is a reminder to accept all tastes of life-good and bad.

In many marathi households, a mixture of neem leaves, jaggery, tamarind, and spices is prepared and consumed as prasad on this day. As per legends, this ritual is not about health, it is also about honouring tradition and invoking blessings for the year ahead. Here's the tradtional recipe of the unique blend called Kadulimbachya Golya, which means neem tablets or raw leaf balls.

Ingredients: 10-12 tender neem leaves, 1 tbsp jaggery, 1 tsp tamarind, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp ajwain, 3-4 peppercorn, 1/4 tsp blakc salt, and salt to taste.
Method: Blend it all together and ajust seasoning, if required. Your chatpata treat is ready. Roll into small balls and enjoy.

According to experts, Gudi Padwa is not just about celebration. It is also about renewal and neem is considered purifying in traditional belief. It is associated with cleansing negative energies in life and encourages a fresh mindful beginning.
