Gujarat lifts alcohol ban in some places to promote Global business
A groundbreaking decision by the Gujarat government on relaxation of liquor ban in some parts of the dry state to stimulate international trade is all set to change the dynamics of trade in Gujarat.
Since the establishment of Gujarat, it has been a dry state and this move of easing the stringent liquor prohibition laws within the GIFT City campus at Gandhinagar is appreciated by the trade fraternity. The permission specifically permits the provision of "wine and dine" facilities within the GIFT City campus at Gandhinagar as it is believed to boost the trade connections for the state.
The legacy and new changes
Gujarat has been famous for being the birthplace of the legendary father of the nation- Mahatma Gandhi, following and adopting his principles the state has adhered to a ban on the production, storage, sale, and consumption of alcoholic beverages since its inception. However, recognizing the evolving character of GIFT City as a flourishing global financial and technological hub, the state government has chosen to revoke and make adjustments with certain restrictions to cater to the needs of the international community.
The official statement
According to an official statement released last week, ‘’The relaxation in liquor laws aims to nurture a "global business ecosystem" within GIFT City. This strategic move is anticipated to benefit not only the employees and officials based in GIFT City but also extend to visitors and stakeholders involved in various economic activities within the area.’’
The state's prohibition department emphasized GIFT City's significance as a hub of economic activities, deeming it necessary to adapt to the changing requirements of a global audience. The statement clarified that under the new policy, hotels, restaurants, and clubs within the GIFT City area will be eligible for permits to offer "wine and dine" facilities.
While patrons will be allowed to drink liquor within these facilities, the sale of liquor bottles will not be permitted. However, as per the statement liquor access permits will be granted to owners and employees of companies operating in GIFT City, and temporary permits will be extended to their visitors. This calculated approach is designed to strike a balance between meeting the demands of a global business environment along with ensuring responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages.
