What is sago

Sago is a food that is eaten world over, and is a staple in some parts, where people cook it into delicious recipes. Sago, or sabudana as Indians know it, is starch that has been extracted from tapioca roots, and is sieved in heavy pressure to form small rounded starch aggregates known as pearls. Due to its limited nutritional and high starch content, sago is often disavowed as a healthy food, which is why it is often accompanied with other nutritional foods. However, since it is made out of the purest form of starch and carbohydrates, it is known to be a good source of nutrition for a baby’s physical development.

Sago for babies

Sago is a good food option to give to infants as an introductory food. Although it has low nutritional properties, the purest form of starch and rich carbohydrate content along with the limited nutrients provide just the right amount of fuel to kickstart a baby’s physical development. It is a simple food that can be considered as a staple for your baby after it has turned six months old. Let’s look at some benefits sago provides for a baby’s physical development.

3/9

sagbo

Calcium is the most concentrated mineral in sago. The high calcium content helps in one of the most crucial aspects of physical growth - bone development. Sago provides the right amount of calcium required by your baby to develop strong and well functioning bones.

4/9

Muscle development

Although insufficient for adults, the protein content in sago is enough to aid muscle growth in babies. Moreover, it is a vegetarian source of protein, a quality that most vegetarian baby foods lack. The protein helps in building muscular structure and strength.

5/9

Digestive health

Sago is a pure form of starch and carbohydrates, as opposed to being processed, like many baby foods are. This not only makes it easy for babies to digest, but it also improves digestive health. Digestive issues like constipation are easily remedied by sago.

6/9

Satiety

The high carbohydrate concentration not only keeps your baby’s energy levels high, it is also broken down into slow digestion, which helps in keeping your baby satiated for longer.

7/9

Weight management

Both starch and carbohydrates help in maintaining a healthy weight by helping in building good fat and muscles, therefore sago is a good option to feed underweight babies. However, the quantity should be kept under check, as feeding your baby too much sago can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

8/9

Cardiovascular health

The cardiovascular system is improved because of the potassium present in sago. It improves blood flow, blood circulation, blood pressure, and regulates heartbeat.

9/9

Body temperature

Thanks to sago’s cooling effect on the body, it can therefore prevent your baby’s body from getting warm and uncomfortable by bringing the temperature down.
