How to make hummus using Indian masalas

Classic hummus is tasty, but add a desi twist and it turns into something you’ll want to keep dipping into. Think of the creamy texture of regular hummus, now mixed with bold Indian spices that feel warm, familiar and a little more exciting. It’s a mix of East meets Middle East, and once tasted, the plain version just won’t feel the same. Whether it’s spread on toast, scooped up with fresh veggies, or eaten straight from the bowl, this Indian-style hummus is full of flavour in every bite.

2/5

What you’ll need

Boiled chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, tahini or roasted sesame seeds, roasted cumin powder, red chilli powder, chaat masala, garam masala, kasurimethi (optional), green chilli (optional), olive oil, and curd (optional).

3/5

How to make it

Add the chickpeas, tahini (or sesame seeds), garlic, lemon juice, salt, and your chosen Indian masalas to a blender. Pour in a little olive oil and some cold water to adjust the consistency. Blend until smooth and creamy. Taste and tweak the flavours as needed. For extra tang, add more lemon. For more heat, blend in another green chilli. Once done, transfer the hummus to a bowl, drizzle with olive oil, and top with a few chilli flakes or fresh coriander. And just like that, your desi-style hummus is ready to impress.

4/5

Why it’s good for the body

Chickpeas are packed with fibre and plant protein, so they keep the stomach full without feeling heavy. The Indian spices do more than add flavour; they support digestion and help boost metabolism. Cumin soothes the gut, chilli adds a kick, and lemon brings balance. It’s also dairy-free, gluten-free, and good for the skin because of the healthy fats in sesame and olive oil. Plus, it handles snack cravings in a way that chips and ready-made dips just don’t.

5/5

Easy to add to any meal

This is one of those rare, versatile, and reliable things that works beautifully and easily with almost everything. Want to replace mayo in your sandwich? Just use this creamy, flavour-packed spread instead. Need something fresh to perk up your usual roti roll? Hummus to the rescue, every single time. Looking for a healthier, crowd-pleasing party dip? It’s right here, ready to impress anyone instantly. You can even generously spoon it onto your salad or mix it into a warm, nourishing grain bowl. Basically, once you make it, it quickly becomes your everyday go-to for almost everything.
