Foods you can eat before hitting the gym

Working out just after having a heavy meal isn’t advisable but exercising on an empty stomach is even worse. People tend to feel low energy while training on an empty stomach. Munching on a small nutrition-rich snack is very important before hitting the gym to avoid fatigue. A carbohydrate-rich pre-workout meal will also help you increase stamina and lead to better performance. Carbohydrate is the powerhouse of energy and thus having food rich in carbs is ideal before your workout session. Here is a list of a few things one can have before working out to increase their energy level throughout the session. (Image: istock)

Eat right, but light

It really depends on the person whether they want a small snack or a balanced meal before hitting the gym. Some people prefer eating a highly nutritious meal rather than a snack. Having some chicken, veggies, and rice makes a classic pre-workout meal. It is the perfect combination of proteins and carbs-both the essentials that will keep your body going for the next few hours of heavy training or workout. Since this is more of a full meal, have it two hours prior to your workout session. Having the veggies and the chicken in the grilled form will make it healthier and lighter, thus choose your recipe wisely. (Image: istock)

Smoothie

Smoothies, especially the ones made with fresh seasonal fruits, work the best. These are not only super yummy, but also super healthy. The best part? Easy to make and also easier to have. One can even add some protein powder while blending the smoothie, to make it healthier. Such fruit smoothies provide us with the energy that is much needed before hitting the gym. (Image: Pexels)

Omelette

Everyone loves a good fluffy omelette, right? Eggs act as the best friend for all fitness and gym freaks. Be it boiled, poached or even raw- eggs can be had in any form before a heavy workout session. Omelettes can provide muscle-building proteins and will keep us energized throughout the session. One can always customize it according to their own taste and requirements! (Image: istock)

Protein bars

Protein bars come to the rescue when one doesn’t have the time to prepare a pre-workout meal. These bars are super rich in protein and also fulfill the energy requirement before working out. One can even make their own batch of protein bars and store them for future use. Home-made bars are much healthier as one adds the ingredients according to their need. (Image: istock)

Peanut butter on whole wheat bread

Both peanut butter and whole wheat bread make a great pre-workout snack. The protein content of peanut butter is perfect to prep you up for the session and the bread will keep you full and restrict the hunger pangs from distracting you during working out. Since wholewheat bread is a source of complex carbohydrates, one should have this snack two to three hours prior to the session. (Image: Pexels)
