Milk and fish combination

Some food combinations might sound delicious, but when we look at their composition, they might not be healthy for the human body. Every coin has two sides, and the same is true for the truth associated with these food combinations. Today, we will talk about one such combination of milk and fish. When we say fish and milk, most of us are reminded of our grandmothers' advice not to combine the two or it will lead to some serious skin diseases. So, is the combination of fish and milk healthy or bad? Let us find the truth. (Image: istock)

Expert’s take

Recently, Dr. Siddhant Bhargava shared a reel video on Instagram and mentioned that scientifically, there is no evidence that drinking milk while eating fish is bad for the body and skin. As per some schools of thought, this combination can be harmful only if you are allergic to either of the products. (Image: istock)

What does Ayurveda say?

In Ayurveda, both items have completely opposite effects on the body, so they are incompatible. While milk has a cooling effect, fish has a heating effect, and the combination might create an imbalance that can lead to chemical changes in the body. (Image: istock)

Nutritional values of fish and milk

If you look at the ingredients separately, their nutrient values are quite high, which is why many cultures use the combination (dairy and fish) to help speed up recovery. Dr. Siddhant also mentions that many fish preparations are made with curd (which is made with milk). As per other schools of thought, while both items are a rich sources of protein, individually, their composition is very different from each other, therefore, they need different digestive juices to digest. The imbalance can wreak havoc on the digestive system, which can alter the chemical reaction in the body and further weaken your immune system. (Image: istock)

Final words

From a scientific perspective, the combination is not toxic at all. However, if we look at the philosophy of Ayurveda, it might cause some discomfort. Although many cultures use this combination to treat people and avoid many chronic illnesses, the facts are not consensus. In a nutshell, the combination might be problematic for people with a weak immune system. Hence, it is advisable to check with a certified medical practitioner before making any dietary changes and also avoid blindly trusting a superstition or myth. (Image: istock)
