Easy Janmashtami prasad recipes

Think of Janmashtami and the first thing that comes to mind is- ‘Prasad’. This year, the festival will be celebrated on 24th August to commemorate the birthday of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. We all know that he loves everything made with milk, including butter, curd and chaach. That’s the reason; he is also called ‘Maakhan Chor.’ The celebration of Janmashtami is incomplete without Prasad or Naivedyam that has a lot of dishes made with milk and butter. Here are a few popular prasads that you can easily prepare at home and offer him during the midnight puja rituals that includes bathing Krishna's idol with honey, milk and water and dressing him up in new poshak.

Maakhan Mishri

If you have been to Vrindavan, this Prasad is served in tiny clay pots that have a lid too. It is considered Lord Krishna’s favourite. You can easily make it at home by mixing homemade white butter/maakhan and mishri (sugar crystals). Once properly mixed, refrigerate it for an hour.

Dhania Panjiri

This is the most popular offering served to Lord Krishna on Janmashtami. To prepare this at home, you need to roast coriander seeds powder till it turns golden brown in colour. Next, add powdered sugar and desi ghee and mix gently. Once all the ingredients are mixed well, add chopped cashew nuts, almonds, pistachios, mishri, and raisins. Allow it to cool for some time and your Panjiri is ready. This prasad is considered good for the gut and is popular in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Punjab region of the country.

Makhana Paag

This simple recipe is an integral part of ‘Bhog’ served to Lord Krishna on the eve of Janmashtami. Made with lotus seeds (makhana), milk, ghee and powdered sugar, this sweet dish can be made in 15 minutes. All you need to do is cook sugar and milk together to thick consistency and then add the ghee roasted makhanas in it. Allow it to cool and your crispy Makhana Paag is ready.

Gopalkala

Often called as ‘food of the poor’, this prasad is made with beaten rice, cucumber, coconut, curd, ghee, sugar and roasted cumin seeds. All you have to do is, mix all the ingredients and shape them in the form of laddoo. Traditionally, Gopalkala is served to Lord Krishna during the midnight prayer of Janmashtami.

Sabudana Khichdi

When it comes to fasting, people in India often make this dish as a wholesome meal. But, on the eve of Janmashtami, it is served as a prasad to Lord Krishna. Made with soaked sabudana, green chilli, peanuts, sendha namak, tomato, and ghee, this healthy dish is full of carbohydrates and gives instant energy after the completion of fast. All you need to do is make a tempering of ghee, cumin seeds and red chilli, add peanut and roast till they turn golden brown. Next, add chopped tomatoes and cook for 4-5 minutes. Once done, add soaked sabudana and salt and mix gently. Cook for 2-3 minutes and your healthy Sabudana Khichdi is ready.
