Love seasonal fruits? Then transform them into dry fruits to relish throughout the year

Love gorging on seasonal fruits, especially the ones that are available only for winters, then we have an interesting idea to store your favorite fruits and enjoy them throughout the year. It is practically impossible to store fresh fruits for more than a week or maximum 15-20 days, but what if we tell you that by following these quick steps one can simply store winter fruits for over a year by trying this simple hack. So, read on to find out…

2/7

The miracle hack

From adding a punch of sweet, citrusy and delightful taste and flavours to desserts, baked delights and savouries, winter fruits are loved for their expectational taste and potent health properties, but retaining their freshness for a long time may seem like a bluff. However, a simple hack to retain this is by making dry fruits made with these simple seasonal fruits to retain their freshness for a long time. In fact, by drying fruits at home, you control quality, avoid preservatives, and create versatile snacks, toppings, or ingredients for smoothies and baked goods. Here are some simple ways that will help you retain your favourite seasonal fruits by following these simple steps given below.

3/7

Choose fresh fruits

To begin with the process of making dry fruits, always choose fresh, ripe, undamaged seasonal fruits that are at the peak ripeness for maximum flavor and nutrition. Then, wash them thoroughly, and slice the fruits into small pieces about ½ an inch thick to ensure uniform drying; smaller fruits like berries can be halved or left whole.

4/7

Preparation methods

Next, blanch denser fruits like peaches or plums in boiling water for 30 seconds, then plunge into ice water to loosen skins for easy peeling, after this step preserves color and texture. For softer fruits such as pineapple or kiwi, simply pat dry after slicing. Arrange pieces on dehydrator trays or parchment-lined baking sheets without overlapping, ensuring good air circulation for even moisture removal.

Dehydration techniques

Next, take a baking tray or airfryer basket, and preheat the oven. Then add in these fruits and let it dry over medium heat. Repeat this process, and dry it in the oven 2-3 times by rotating trays midway for that perfect consistency. Once done, spread it on a cheese cloth or tray to dry up properly, add in a dash of sea salt to preserve it for a long time.

6/7

Storage for retaining freshness

Pack cooled dry fruits in airtight glass jars, vacuum-sealed bags, or mylar pouches with oxygen absorbers, storing in a cool, dark pantry for up to a year or the freezer for 18 months. Label with dates and fruit types, checking quarterly for signs of spoilage like mold or off odors. Properly dried fruits retain 80-90% of original vitamins, making them nutrient powerhouses year-round.

Rehydrate in warm water or milk for porridges, blend into fruit leathers or energy bars, or chop for trail mixes, salads, and yogurt toppers. Infuse with spices like cinnamon during drying for gourmet twists, or grind into powders for smoothies and baking. This method not only curbs food waste but turns fleeting seasonal bounty into a pantry staple full of concentrated antioxidants and fiber.
