Why these foods are offered to Lord Shiva

India is a land of festivals filled with colours, customs, and culinary delights. And the festival of Maha Shivratri, which celebrates the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is no exception. In Hinduism, Lord Shiva is offered various foods as part of rituals and prayers on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri. According to experts, these offerings hold symbolic and cultural significance. On this day, which will be celebrated on Sunday, February 15, devotees will observe nirjala or phalahar vrat, offer him (Lord Shiva) bel patra, dhatura, milk, honey, water and more and chant Om Namah Shivaya. Here are 10 foods traditionally offered to Lord Shiva on Maha Shivaratri and why.

Bael Leaves


Lord Shiva is offered these leaves as part of a ritual, and they are considered sacred. It is believed that offering bael leaves pleases Lord Shiva and brings blessings.

Bael Fruit



The fruit of bael is also offered to Lord Shiva on this day and is said to symbolize the soul.

Milk


It is one of the primary offerings made to Lord Shiva. On this day devotees pour milk over the Shiva lingam as a sign of purification, devotion, and seeking blessings.

Honey


Another food offered as bhog to Lord Shiva is honey, and is considered auspicious and is often used in rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva. Honey symbolizes sweetness and purity.

He is also offered curd or yogurt, which signifies purity and the cooling aspect of devotion.

Ghee is also offered to Lord Shiva and is said to hold significance in Hindu rituals; it is considered sacred. It is a sign of purity, enlightenment, and prosperity.

Sandalwood Paste



Sandalwood paste is applied to the Shiva lingam as an offering during worship. It is said to have cooling properties and is considered spiritually purifying.

Also known as cannabis, bhaang is a holy offering that devotees offer to Lord Shiva on this day. It is mostly served in the form of leaves, laddoos or concoctions.
