The state of Jharkhand in Eastern India is known for its waterfalls, hills, and holy places including Baidyanath Dham, Parasnath, Rajrappa etc. Moreover, the cuisine of the state is full of flavourful and luscious dishes. Since almost 75 per cent of the population of Jharkhand lives in rural areas, the food consumed in the state is very rustic, simple, and earthy. However, the simplicity of the dishes doesn’t take away the fact that they are always brimming with flavour and richness.


The staple foods of Jharkhand are vegetable, rice, dal, and pickle. The vegetables are prepared in numerous ways like fried, roasted, boiled, or curried. Also, in rural areas, or the areas inhabited by tribal people, many exotic dishes could be found which are equally delicious and tempting. ​Chilka Roti

Chilka Roti is prepared using rice flour and besan. It is prepared in the households during festive seasons and special occasions. It is generally served with a curry made with elephant's foot yam (called as "oal" locally), mutton curry, or chana dal chutney.

​Dhuska

It is the most common food in Jharkhand. Dhuska is usually consumed as a breakfast item and is prepared from rice and lentil batter, which is fried later. It is normally served with traditional ghugni, which is a simple curry made with black chickpeas and potato curry.

​Handia

Handia is a drink which is prevalent in the state. It is a rice beer which is prepared by the local community. It is made from the ‘ranu’ tablet which is a combination of 20-25 herbs, which is mixed with boiled rice and left to ferment. This drink gets ready within a week.

​Pittha

Pittha is the famous dish of Jharkhand having origin from West Bengal. It is usually stuffed with aloo ka chokha, different varieties of boiled dals, khoa, or thickened milk. It is a special dish mainly prepared during the festival Makar Sankranti.

​Til Barfi

The sweet dish is the pride of Jharkhand and is exclusively prepared during the festival of Makar Sakranti. The state takes great pride in Til Barfi as one of its most scrumptious and nutritive delicacies. Since it is so loved by the locals, it is prepared on other occasions also.

​Arsa Roti
