Importance of protein

Protein is the building block of the human body. For the unversed, it is an essential nutrient that plays a crucial role in the overall functioning of the body. It is made up of amino acids, which work as a building block of life and help build and repair tissues, including muscles, skin, hair, and internal organs. It also plays a key role in muscle growth, immune support, enzyme and hormone production, and maintaining a healthy metabolism. Protein is available via two key sources—plant and animal—and the debate around which one offers more nutrition has always been a matter of debate. So, on that note, let us explore.

2/8

What is plant protein?

Plant protein is found in foods like lentils, tofy, tempeh, chickpeas, quinoa, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

3/8

Benefits of plant protein

It is said that plant proteins are often cholesterol-free, which makes them heart-healthy too. Also, they are often rich in fiber, which makes them digestive-friendly. They are also rich in antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory compounds.

4/8

What is animal protein?

As the name suggests, it refers to protein that you get via animals and their products. The key sources of animal protein are meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy.

5/8

Benefits of animal protein

According to experts, they are considered to be complete proteins because they contain all nine essential amino acids the body can't produce on its own. They help with muscle growth and post-workout recovery as well.

6/8

Strength and muscle building

When it comes to strength and muscle building, animal protein has an upper hand due to its amino acid profile, which includes leucine, that plays a key role in muscle protein synthesis. However, as per experts, a well-planned plant-protein diet can also give similar results. It is said that foods like soy, pea, quinoa are high-protein options that support muscle growth when consumed in adequate amounts.

7/8

Nutrition beyond protein

When it comes to animal protein, they are also rich in vitamin B12, iron, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids. And if we look at plant protein, they are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and phytonutrients, and are associated with a lower risk of chronic diseases.

8/8

Which is better

The choice of protein totally depends on your goals, lifestyle, ethics, and health needs. As per experts, if the goal is to gain muscles faster, then animal protein may help give quicker results. And if you are aiming for sustainable energy, long-term health, and also concerned about the environment, then plant protein is the answer.
