A centenarian reveals the secret behind her long life

Time and again, there have been several reports that red wine is known to increase longevity and this time, it's a centenarian from England, who has proven that drinking red wine daily is in fact the reason for her longevity. (Images courtesy: iStock)

Who is this centenarian?

Julie Iverson, who recently celebrated her 108th birthday was born in Denmark in 1914 and has 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren. She celebrated this milestone birthday with a party at Brampton Lodge care home in Warrington, where carers described her as a ‘lovely and kind person'. As per a BBC report, “The staff of the care home revealed that Mrs Iverson will always know right away if her favoured red wine has been watered down – a daily glass of which she credits among the secrets of her long life.”

What do the studies say?

According to the Zutphen study, “Long-term light alcohol intake lowered cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risk and increased life expectancy.” If someone consumed light wine daily then it was associated with 5 years longer life expectancy.

According to a research, “Wine contains antioxidants like resveratrol that, in a test tube study and on cells under certain circumstances, has been shown to be beneficial. But that’s true for a lot of compounds that don’t pan out when studied rigorously.”

Also, as per a research published in Advances in Nutrition, “A person would need to drink somewhere between 505 to 2,762 litres of red wine per day to consume 1 gram of resveratrol.”

The bottom line

Though various studies have proven that red wine helps in boosting longevity, this doesn’t mean that you should also start drinking it. Alcohol consumption is never healthier, but it should be consumed in moderate quantities.
