How to treat constipation at home

Constipation and bloating are two common problems, which are related to what we eat, how we eat, and when we eat every day. As per experts, constipation is a common digestive issue that occurs when bowel movements become infrequent, hard, or difficult to pass, often leaving you feeling bloated and uncomfortable. When waste stays in the colon for too long, it becomes dry and tight, causing strain during passing. Over time, untreated constipation can lead to several side effects, such as abdominal pain, gas, heaviness, reduced appetite, and a constant feeling of incomplete evacuation. Hence, it is important to pay attention to eating the right kind of foods and the right way. In a recent video on the Isha Foundation website, Sadhguru shared seven common home remedies that one can use for constipation. Scroll down to read the details.

2/8

Eat water-rich foods

Sadhguru suggests that if you are eating a lot on the street or junk food, then there are chances you are consuming very less water-rich foods. So, it is important to add a lot of water-rich foods in your daily diet. Wondering why? Because, our body is 70% water content. He also suggests adding fruits with rich water content in your diet too.

3/8

Don't snack between meals

As per Sadhguru eating is not bad, but frequent eating is, because when you keep eating between the meals, your body doesn't get enough rest and your digestive system is always at work, and in the long run, it can impact the overall working of your gut health resulting in irregular bowel movements and constipation. It is also said that frequent snacking causes spikes in blood sugar, especially if you’re grabbing carbs like chips, biscuits, namkeen, or sweets. This leads to cravings, energy crashes, irritability, and increased fat storage as well.

4/8

Begin your meal with ghee

He recommends starting your meal with ghee. He states that traditionally, ghee was eaten as the first thing in the meal, as it works as a lubricant that lubricates the entire alimentary canal, and helps with easy passage of food. At the same time, if you eat ghee and carbohydrates together, or ghee and sugar together, then it adds fat, hence, it is important to eat it at the beginning to let it work as a lubricant. As per Sadhguru, those who eat regularly and in the right manner, they often have a healthy gut. It is packed with healthy fats that support hormone balance, fuel the body with steady energy, and help in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. A natural source of butyrate, ghee also promotes better digestion, reduces inflammation in the gut, and strengthens intestinal health.

5/8

Begin your day with neem and turmeric

He also recommends beginning the day with neem leaves and turmeric balls, which he also consumed on a daily basis. As per Sadhguru, neem leaves, which are valued for centuries in traditional medicine for their powerful healing properties are proven to be rich in antioxidants, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory compounds. And turmeric on the other hand is called the “golden spice,” and is rich in curcumin, a natural compound with strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, turmeric supports joint health, boosts immunity, and promotes better digestion and reduces the risk of constipation. As per Sadhguru, the combination of neem leaves and turmeric together helps remove toxins, parasites, and help you attain a healthy digestive system. Neem leaves also help control excess sugar levels, making them beneficial for metabolic balance. As a natural insect repellent, neem oil is widely used for scalp infections, dandruff, and hair strengthening.

6/8

Adults should avoid dairy products

As per Sadhguru, dairy products have certain enzymes, which are used today to manufacture textile adhesives, and these adhesives are not water soluble, so when you consume a lot of dairy products, it gets stick in your colon, so the waste material which should have easily flown out will not flow out of the system.

7/8

Consume Triphala or castor oil

As per Sadhguru the mixture of three fruits amla, baheda, and haritaki (triphala) made in the right quantity and consumed with water or a spoonful of milk or honey, it can keep the gut and colon clean. He also suggests that in case you don't get the above-mentioned combo, have a half a spoon of warm castor oil in a glass of water at night and feel the magic.

8/8

Don't be shit-scared

As per Sadhguru, if you are constipated in your thoughts and emotions, it will surely impact your gut health. Because the human brain is connected with each and every part of the body. So, it is important to keep your mind and thoughts clear, as it will help you have a clear gut and a non-constipated one.
