How these home remedies help with uric acid

Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines. The kidneys filter and remove uric acid through urine. However, when the body produces too much or the kidneys fail to eliminate it properly, uric acid levels rise, leading to health issues like joint pain, kidney stones, kidney damage, inflammation, joint stiffness, metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity, and more. Dimple Jangda, a wellness and nutrition expert recently shared a reel on Instagram, where she shared 6 Ayurvedic home remedies to treat uric acid. As per Dimple, the underlying causes of increased uric acid could be excess diuretics, drinking too much alcohol, hypothyroidism, obesity or purine rich diet (red meats,organ meats etc). In the post she shared 6 Ayurvedic home remedies that one can try at home.

Triphala


As per her post, Triphala is a Sanskrit word that means “three fruits.” As the name suggests, it’s an herbal treatment that consists of three fruits, namely bibhitaki, amalaki, and haritaki. She states in the video that triphala has anti-inflammatory properties and is an excellent remedy for uric acid levels.

Bitter foods

She suggests adding neem juice or giloy juice to daily diet as such juices help reduce the uric acid levels. As per a study, the histological observations have evidenced that neem extract effectively rescues the kidney from CP-mediated oxidative damage. It is said that through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds neem leaves can help reduce uric acid levels.

Astringent foods


As per her posts, astringent foods like cherries and wild berries have anti-inflammatory properties and are said to reduce the uric acid levels and the water retention. It is said that cherries contain anthocyanins, which help block uric acid production and help the body eliminate excess uric acid. These compounds are also said to reduce inflammation in the joints, preventing pain and swelling. As per experts, cherries also help the kidneys filter and remove uric acid and act as a natural diuretic.

Ginger

She suggests adding ginger in daily diet as well. And as per studies, ginger tea makes for a smarter choice that helps reduce uric acid levels, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. It is said to contain polyphenols and flavonoids that also exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation that often accompany high uric acid and gout. It is also said that regular intake of ginger tea may help reduce swelling, joint pain, and inflammation associated with hyperuricemia and gout attacks.

Turmeric


In her video, she also mentions adding turmeric in daily diet. As per a study, turmeric medicinally assists in the control of inflammation and pain, and contains at least three naturally occurring polyphenols, namely curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin, collectively termed as curcuminoids. One can make herbal tea with turmeric, water, and pepper, and consume it for better health.

Green papaya

She suggests taking a raw green papaya, dice it well, put it in a bowl of water, boil it well and filter and sip this tea early in the morning. As per her post, drinking it on an empty stomach helps control the release of uric acid levels in your body. She explains, "Papaya is very good for gout sufferers since it contains “papain” a proteolytic enzyme which is a natural anti-inflammatory, helping keep the body in an alkaline state, and may help prevent the buildup of uric acid in the blood."
