Warming herbs for winter

When the cold weather strikes, you always feel the need for eating and drinking something warm, as it’s not easy to keep yourself wrapped in the blanket always. Above all, you need to warm up your body from the inside, and what can be a better way to do so than using herbs in your food or drink? Herbs are an essential part of our life and can improve health in various ways. These herbs not just warm the body, but improve blood circulation as well. Here is a list of 5 such herbs to welcome winters on a healthy note.

2/6

Tulsi

Tulsi is known to help relieve the symptoms of allergies, breathing problems and bronchitis. It is a potent anti-oxidant and is not just good for the resperatory system but also has anti-ageing properties. Chewing a few tulsi leaves with 2-3 black peppercorns and 1/2 a teaspoon honey is the best way to keep the body warm.

3/6

Coriander

There is a reason why nature makes coriander so abundantly available in winters. The herb is added in almost everything we cook in winters, from soups and salads to bakes and curries. It is a rich source of vitamin C and though not exactly warming in nature, it increases the body's immunity and helps file against season induced ailments.
4/6

Rosemary

Fresh and dried rosemary is popular as an addition to many culinary creations. Researches have proved rosemary's ability to help fight allergy symptoms and provide relief to asthma sufferers. The herb contains rosmarinic acid which has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It is a free radical scavenger that can suppress the inflammatory responses of certain white blood cells, as well as allergic antibodies. Use the herb in your dishes and salads as a garnish.

5/6

Oregano

Oregano is a well-known Italian herb and we often add it in our pizza. During winters, use abundantly, the store bought oregano seasoning in your soups and stews. They not just make the food delicious but also have a warming nature and are hence useful in winters.

6/6

Fenugreek

Fenugreek leaves are abundantly available in winters and are considered to be warm and nourishing. They are also effective against diabetes and bad cholesterol and are good for weight loss. They have a slightly bitter taste and hence it is not a good idea to add them in soups. Use them in making parathas and subzees and reap their benefits.
