This is why there is a hole in an artisanal coffee bag

This one is for all coffee lovers. If you have been shopping for coffee beans, you must have observed that while the established brands sell coffee in jars, the artisanal ones serve it in airtight or zip-lock bags. As per experts, the holes are helpful in releasing carbon dioxide and also restrict the absorption of oxygen. In the world of the art of preserving coffee beans, this process is known as de-gassing, and it continues even after the beans have been packaged. As per studies, it has been found that when gases build up within the bag, and destroy the quality of coffee beans, they often lose their flavour over time. It has also been found that if the gas builds up and doesn’t find a way to release, it might pop open, ruining the coffee. The valves are specially designed with silicon detailing that allows carbon dioxide to leak out but doesn’t allow oxygen, moisture, or any external element to enter the bag. (Image: istock)
