Why Rusk should not be consumed regularly?

Rusk, a crunchy twice-baked bread is enjoyed by many across the world with tea or coffee. One look at it, and this snack may seem like a harmless one. But, do you know, consuming this harmless snack on a regular basis might have some adverse effects on your health? How are they made?

To make rusks, bread dough is baked, sliced, and then baked again until they turn golden crispy. The process of baking twice makes these snacks dry and crunchy, allowing it to have a longer shelf life. Additionally, Rusks are often flavoured with sugar, milk, eggs, and other ingredients to enhance their texture and flavour.

These rusk biscuits, while tempting, offer little to no nutritional value, leaving us feeling unsatisfied and lacking vital nutrients. They are calorie-dense and can quickly add up to your daily intake, leading to weight gain. One rusk can contain up to 40-60 calories, and it's easy to consume a handful without realizing the number of calories you're consuming.

Refined carbohydrates

Consuming such refined carbs can lead to blood sugar spikes, leaving us feeling sluggish and craving more. Rusks are commonly made with refined flour, which means they lack dietary fibre. Refined carbs can cause a spike in your blood sugar levels, leading to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Sadly, rusk biscuits fall short in this department. Incorporating protein-rich options can help keep us full, support muscle growth, and stabilize blood sugar levels.

Rusk biscuits are typically low in fibre, leaving us prone to hunger pangs and potential digestive issues. It can be difficult to digest, causing gastrointestinal distress such as bloating, gas, and constipation.
