Turmeric vs Black Turmeric: Which is better?

From adding a punch of taste to curries to healing cold, cough or pain, most of us have grown up seeing as well as using turmeric in our day-to-day cooking and in several home remedies. But did you know there is another variation of turmeric, which is black in colour and is believed to be more potent than regular haldi? Here’s all you need to know about black turmeric and which one is better?

2/6

What makes these turmeric variations different?

From ayurveda to home remedies to regular cooking yellow turmeric is commonly used, but little do we know that the black turmeric is also used for its therapeutic and healing properties. Here’s what makes these two types of turmeric varieties different.

3/6

Yellow turmeric

Both the variety of turmerics hail from the same family. However, turmeric is commonly yellow in colour, and this one variety is scientifically known as Curcuma longa. The yellow turmeric is known for its bright golden color and warm, earthy flavor with a slight bitterness. It is known globally for its potent health benefits such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-boosting properties, which makes turmeric a superfood food for boosting health and wellness naturally. This is majorly because of a compound called Curcumin, which is a potent antioxidant, which helps in boosting metabolism, immunity, joint health and improve skin condition.

4/6

Black turmeric

Black turmeric also known as Curcuma Caesia has a distinctive dark blue-black or purplish hue, this rhizome has a stronger, pungent, and slightly bitter taste. This unique black turmeric contains unique compounds like tannins, elemene, and bornyl acetate, which contribute to its powerful medicinal properties. Traditionally, black turmeric was used in making Ayurvedic and herbal medicine for pain relief, respiratory issues, digestive health, and boosting energy levels. Interestingly, the curcumin content in this turmeric is much lower than that of yellow turmeric, but it is compensated with other bioactive compounds that have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.

5/6

Which is more healthy?

Yellow turmeric is widely used for its high antioxidant properties that helps combat chronic inflammation, improves skin health, and helps in general wellbeing. On the other hand, black turmeric has a stronger emphasis on targeted pain relief, anti-inflammatory effects, and respiratory support, making it a powerful herb for specific health concerns such as arthritis and asthma.

6/6

Uses of black and yellow turmeric

There’s no denying that yellow turmeric is a kitchen staple used in cooking, curries, curries, sabzis, smoothies, teas, and skin treatments due to its pleasant flavor and bright color. On the other hand, black turmeric is rare, but has more medicinal properties that is typically used in herbal formulations, topical applications, or consumed in small quantities as part of traditional remedies.Black turmeric is stronger, more bitter taste limits its culinary use compared to the more versatile yellow turmeric.

To conclude

In a nutshell, it can be concluded that both turmeric and black turmeric offer unique qualities: regular turmeric is a versatile culinary and health ingredient, which is known for its curcumin content, while black turmeric stands out for its rare, intense flavor and potent medicinal properties targeting inflammation, pain, and respiratory health. In fact, choosing the two depends on individual health goals and desired usage.
