Probiotics and their weight reducing qualities

One of the most common health problems that we face today is obesity. An increase in weight invites various problems like high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, etc. To lose weight, probiotics have proved to be helpful. Here is a look at probiotics and how they help you lose weight.

​What are probiotics?

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for you and especially your digestive system. Probiotics are often called "good" or "helpful" bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy. Probiotics are found in supplements and some foods, like yoghurt. They are often suggested by doctors to help with digestive problems.

As per studies, probiotics can help you lose weight and lower your body fat percentage. The most common probiotic-lactobacillus-has proved to be very helpful in losing weight and belly fat.

​How do they help lose weight and belly fat?

There are many different microorganisms in and on the human body, mainly in the form of friendly bacteria. Some of these bacteria may play a role in weight loss and gain. In the gut, beneficial bacteria help break down and digest food. They also help create nutrients and vitamins for the body to use. The probiotic bacteria feed on fibres and turn them into helpful compounds.

Research in The British Journal of Nutrition studied the effects of Lactobacillus on people with obesity. Women who took the probiotic supplement lost more weight during the study than women who didn’t. Additionally, the group taking a probiotic supplement continued to lose more weight in the weight-maintenance stage, after they finished dieting. The same effects did not occur in men, however.

Another 2013 study published in the Journal of Functional Foods looked at the effects of Lactobacillus on individuals who were overweight but otherwise healthy ate the yoghurt that contained these Lactobacillus strains for 6 weeks. At the end of this period, the participants had lost an average of 3–4% body fat.

​Foods rich in probiotics

Fermented foods contain probiotics. Yoghurt may be the most well-known dietary source of probiotics. Other fermented foods that often contain helpful bacteria include kefir, fermented and raw cheeses, raw apple cider vinegar, kimchi, miso, etc.

​Are there any side effects of probiotics?

In some cases, mild side effects might include an upset stomach, diarrhoea, gas, and bloating for the first couple of days after you start taking them. They may also trigger allergic reactions. In such cases, stop taking them and talk to your doctor.
