​What is Whey protein?

Whey protein is a mixture of proteins isolated from whey, which is the liquid part of milk that separates during cheese production. Whey protein is commonly used for improving athletic performance and increasing strength. Whey protein is considered a complete protein as it contains all 9 essential amino acids. It is low in lactose content.

​How is Whey protein made?

Milk contains two main types of protein: casein (80 per cent) and whey (20 per cent). Whey is found in the watery portion of milk. In the process of cheese production, the fatty parts of the milk coagulate and the whey is separated from it as a byproduct. After being separated during cheese production, whey goes through various processing steps to become whey protein, which is added to shakes, meal replacements and protein bars. Whey protein does not taste very good on its own, which is why it is usually flavoured.

​Health benefits of Whey protein

1. Whey protein is effective for the prevention of age-related muscle loss, as well as for improved strength and a better-looking body.

  • 2. Whey protein is found to be effective at moderating blood sugar, increasing both the levels of insulin and the sensitivity to its effects. Thus, it may help in treating Type 2 Diabetes.
  • 3. Many studies have found that high doses of whey protein supplements reduce C-reactive protein (CRP), a key marker of inflammation in the body.
  • 4. Several studies have found that whey protein may reduce oxidative stress and increase levels of glutathione (an antioxidant). Thus, whey protein may boost the body's natural antioxidant defences.
  • 5. Whey protein is particularly effective for fat burning and satiety (feeling of fullness we experience after eating a meal) compared to other protein types.

    ​Side effects of Whey protein

    In moderate doses, whey protein does not typically cause any adverse events. However, consuming very high doses can cause the following health problems.

  • 1. Some people have problems digesting whey protein and experience symptoms such as bloating, gas, stomach cramps and diarrhoea. But most of these side effects are related to lactose intolerance, which can be resolved by switching to a whey isolate powder.
  • 2. People who are allergic to cow milk may be allergic to whey protein because it comes from the same. Symptoms of a cow’s milk allergy may include hives, rashes, facial swelling, throat and tongue swelling and a runny or stuffy nose.
  • 3. Consuming too much whey protein can lead to long-term damage to your kidneys. It may even result in renal damage over some time.
  • 4. According to some experts, excess intake of whey protein can lead to cardiac arrest, a disturbed heartbeat rhythm and in some cases, complete loss of heart functionalities.
  • 5. Consistent high doses of whey protein may also cause acne.
