Water after Watermelon

You might have heard your elders telling you to avoid drinking water for some time after eating watermelon. Is water after watermelon really harmful or is it just a facade? Read on till the end to know.

Watermelon is a summer favourite fruit and contains Lycopene in large amounts. It is a carotenoid that provides red colour to the watermelon is a dominating antioxidant which has tremendous health benefits. It detoxifies by flushing out free-radicals present in the body and thus, prevents cell damage. This juicy fruit is also packed with thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, choline and betaine.

Ayurveda’s take

Watermelon is already rich in water and consuming more water on top of that can cause bloating and even dissolve the digestive juice present in the stomach. According to Ayurveda, this can disrupt the regular digestive process and even upset the balance of chakras in the body.

Some people might even feel uneasy after drinking water immediately after eating watermelon. Since it delays the digestion process, problems like acidity might arise.

Conclusion

Even though there is no proper scientific proof behind this, but still, it is better to avoid drinking water for some time after having watermelon. People with stomach problems or sensitive stomachs should definitely avoid having water for at least 40-45 minutes after consuming watermelon.

To be on the safer side, have water at least 20-30 minutes after having watermelon. If you are feeling too thirsty, you can drink a sip or two of water but don’t gulp down a whole glass of water after a watermelon.

So, enjoy this delicious fruit during summers and keep yourself well hydrated!
