How to make Hibiscus Flower Tea

Ingredients: 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers, 1 inch cinnamon stick, 1/2 inch piece ginger, and honey/ palm jaggery to taste
Method: Bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the hibiscus flowers, cinnamon stick and ginger pieces. Boil for 5 minutes.
Remove the pot from the heat and cover it. Allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes. Note that keeping the flowers in water for longer may result in a bitter taste. For more flavour, you can add more dried flowers into the water instead.
Strain the liquid, squeezing the cinnamon sticks and ginger pieces to ensure maximum flavour is released.
Add honey or palm jaggery to taste. Serve either hot or cold. Allow the water to cool completely before storing it in the refrigerator.
Tips: Alternately, 2 tsp of cinnamon powder can be used instead of the cinnamon stick. If so, use a cloth to strain the liquid.
This tea is often served cold by refrigerating after step 4, garnished with a few mint leaves or a slice of lemon.

What does the study say?

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa on blood pressure and cardiometabolic markers states that regular consumption of hibiscus could confer reduced cardiovascular disease risk. This includes significant total cholesterol reduction compared to other teas. Iranian research in PMC also found it effective for stage 1 hypertension patients. It is also rich in vitamin C, beta-carotene, and anthocyanins, which combat free radicals linked to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

Cinnamon benefits

It is said that cinnamon helps boost metabolism early in the day, aiding better calorie burn and energy balance throughout the day. The study titled 'Advances in pharmacological effects and mechanism of action of cinnamaldehyde' states that cinnamon contains a compound called cinnamaldehyde which helps burn calories to produce heat. It also highlights that the compound improves glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity and offers cardiovascular protection to the body. It is also said to help regulate blood sugar levels, preventing mid-morning energy crashes or sugar cravings.
