Why should you eat a mixture of jaggery and ghee after meals

As much as we love indulging in heavy meals during the winter season, the weather and sedentary lifestyle makes it difficult to digest the food, which further leads to several digestive ailments like bloating, indigestion, constipation to name a few. Here’s an age-old Ayurvedic remedy, which is believed to fix all these issues too without ruining your palate for sweets after meals.

2/7

What happens when you consume jaggery and ghee?

Making a smooth mixture of jaggery with ghee and consuming it right after meals is a traditional practice in some cultures as it is believed to heal digestive ailments, improve gut health, boost metabolism and also help improve immunity. Here are some more reasons why consuming this mixture after meals may improve health and well being.

3/7

Digestive benefits

Jaggery is believed to help stimulate the digestive enzymes in the stomach. It can also act as a natural mild laxative, which may help prevent constipation. On the other hand mixing it with a small amount of ghee can boost its efficacy as ghee is rich in butyric acid, which is beneficial for the digestive tract and it may help improve digestion and promote a healthy gut.

4/7

Nutrient content

Jaggery is a source of iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins. Consuming jaggery after meals may help supplement these nutrients, especially if there is an iron and folate deficiency in the body or imbalance in blood levels. Adding ghee to jaggery can further boost its health benefits as ghee is a good source of healthy fats, including omega-3 fatty acids and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). It provides a concentrated source of energy to the body and also helps in better weight management.

5/7

Blood sugar regulation

Jaggery has a lower glycemic index as compared to refined sugar, which means it causes a slower and more sustained increase in blood sugar levels. This can be beneficial for individuals trying to manage their blood sugar levels. When mixed with the healthy fats in ghee, this mixture works towards stabilizing blood sugar levels and preventing rapid spikes and crashes.

6/7

Immunity boost

Jaggery contains antioxidants and minerals that may help boost the immune system and protect the body against common illnesses. The butyric acid in ghee is believed to have anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties.

7/7

Joint health

Consuming jaggery and ghee can help alleviate joint pain and arthritis symptoms. This combination helps in reducing inflammation and the lubricating properties of ghee are beneficial for joint health and improves flexibility.
