5 drinks that harm your liver, and can worsen fatty liver disease

Fatty liver disease has become an increasing global health problem, majorly influenced by lifestyles concerning diets and beverages. While food often takes center stage, the type of drinks one consumes can go a long way in affecting liver health. Some beverages are renowned for aggravating fatty liver by encouraging fat deposition, inflammation, and progression toward more serious liver conditions. Understanding such drinks will, therefore, be of prime importance to anyone looking to better the state of their liver and improve its functions. The following are five of the worst drinks, as identified by in-depth studies and consistent results showing their effects on fatty liver conditions.

Sugary soft beverages

Sugary soft drinks are at the top of the list of beverages that can do bad things to the liver. Those fizzy drinks contain a large quantity of fructose, mostly coming from high-fructose corn syrup, which the liver then quickly turns into fat. Science Direct, published studies showing that daily drinking of sugary sodas increased liver fat and inflammation, doubling the risk of NAFLD. Since the liver metabolizes sugar very fast, its metabolic pathway gets overwhelmed by these sugars, which, over time, deposit fat in the liver, leading to chronic liver damage.

Fruit juices

​Packaged fruit juices may look healthy, but their sugar content makes them misleadingly unhealthy. These fruit juices mostly lack the protective fiber of whole fruits, leading to quick increases in both blood sugar and insulin levels. These drinks are pointed out by studies as encouraging the deposition of fat in the liver and worsening NAFLD through increased lipogenesis, the production of fat from sugars within the liver. It is worth limiting the consumption of such fruit juices to lower the burden on the liver. People who consumed fruit juices, were more likely to have NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) as defined by the Fatty Liver Index (FLI).

Alcohol​

Alcohol is widely known to be toxic to the liver, with effects ranging from fatty liver to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Recent research from the Mayo Clinic underlines how even moderate alcohol consumption disrupts enzymes critical to fat metabolism in the liver, leading to protein accumulation, oxidative stress, inflammation, and fat buildup, accelerating progression of alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease alike. Medical consensus underlines that individuals with fatty liver should avoid or greatly restrict alcohol to prevent irreversible liver damage.

Energy drinks

Energy drinks are now an emerging concern for liver health. The combined high level of sugar, caffeine, and stimulants within energy drinks exerts metabolic stress on the liver, as identified in recent animal and clinical studies. Studies demonstrated that energy drink consumption significantly raised liver enzymes-a common indicator of liver damage-along with increased fat deposition and inflammation impeding liver function. Unlike sodas, energy drinks also increase systemic metabolic stress, rendering them particularly damaging to those with or prone to fatty liver.

Iced teas

Sweetened iced teas, though lesser known, have sugar content equivalent to that of soft drinks. Most store-bought iced teas are full of added sugars, which will cause the release of insulin and ultimately the storage of fat in the liver. Studies show that frequent drinking of such sweet tea may result in the same negative impact as it does with soda and commercial juices. The "natural" or "healthy" headline on the drinks tends to be quite misleading; thus, frequent consumption of these drinks is a serious threat to liver health.
