Aggravated pitta dosha? Ayurvedic tips to balance it in summer

Balancing pitta dosha

As summer approaches, the heat can aggravate the pitta dosha in Ayurvedic tradition, leading to imbalances that manifest as irritability, digestive issues, and skin problems. Pitta, one of the three doshas, is associated with the fire and water elements, governing metabolism, digestion, and transformation in the body. When pitta is out of balance, especially during the hot summer months, it is essential to adopt ayurvedic practices that cool and pacify this fiery energy.

2/5

Dietary adjustments

One of the most effective ways to balance pitta is through diet. Incorporate cooling, hydrating, and mildly sweet foods into your meals. Opt for fresh fruits like melons, grapes, and pears, and vegetables such as cucumber, zucchini, and leafy greens. Avoid spicy, salty, and acidic foods, which can further aggravate pitta. Instead, favor bitter and astringent tastes, such as those found in turmeric, coriander, and fennel. Drinking plenty of water and ayurvedic herbal teas particularly those with mint, chamomile, or licorice, can help keep the body cool and hydrated.

3/5

Herbal support

According to Dr. Yamuna BS, Chief Doctor, Guduchi Ayurveda, “Herbal remedies can provide additional support in balancing pitta. Aloe vera juice, known for its cooling properties, can be consumed daily. Triphala, a traditional Ayurvedic formulation, helps maintain digestive health and detoxification. Guduchi and Amalaki are also beneficial herbs that support the cooling and balancing of pitta. Also, you can add Brahmi, Amalaki, coriander, and fennel to your herb rotation. These herbs can be used in tea or as a daily supplement to keep pitta in balance.”

4/5

Lifestyle adjustments

Incorporate lifestyle adjustments to maintain harmony. Dress in light, breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen in cooling colors like white, blue, and green. Take time for relaxation and stress-reducing activities, such as spending time in nature, particularly near water bodies which naturally cool pitta. Ensure you get adequate rest and avoid overstimulation from excessive work or screen time.

5/5

Mental and emotional well-being

Lastly, mental and emotional balance is crucial. Engage in practices that foster inner peace, such as mindfulness, journaling, or listening to soothing music. Surround yourself with a calm and positive environment, and practice forgiveness and letting go of anger, which can exacerbate pitta imbalances.
