Can you spot three cats in this Ghibli-inspired optical illusion?

This Ghibli-style artwork is your new challenge

This is a beautiful Ghibli-style painting that depicts an idyllic, surreal village nestled among nature. It has soft light, pastel colors, and serene atmosphere with small huts, stone paths, flowering cherry blossom trees, and shining lanterns. But the most captivating aspect of the image is the concealed optical illusion, wherein at least three cats are hidden within the landscape.

Do you know the correct pronunciation of Ghibli?

This Ghibli-inspired optical illusion toys with perspective and perception

The piece encapsulates elements of coziness, whimsy, and nostalgia, which are defining features in Ghibli-inspired works. The layering is a delightful reveal, as people gradually put the various elements together. It also creates a feeling of nostalgia, just like how Ghibli movies tend to present secret magical creatures hidden subtly within ordinary settings.

Can you spot the giant cat in the mountain?

The most eye-catching feature in the picture is the huge cat-shaped hill in the distance. At first glance, it seems to be a part of the landscape, but if you take a closer look, the rounded ears, shut eyes, and tiny nose show that it is actually a sleeping cat, merging perfectly with the surroundings. The artist has cleverly used shading and contours to make the mountain resemble the fur and face of a serene feline. This hidden cat adds a magical and surreal touch to the artwork, making it feel like something straight out of a Studio Ghibli film.

There is a cat sitting in the doorway

In the foreground, in front of the stone cottage with a red-tiled roof, is a cat sitting just outside the arched wooden doorway. This cat is easily seen, looking out with wide, inquiring eyes. Its presence adds to the homely and welcoming feel of the village, as if the cats here coexist peacefully with the small cottages and their unseen occupants. The gentle light of the lantern next to the door again highlights the cat's silhouette and makes it part of the scenery.

Did you see the cat near the pond?

Looking deeper into the picture, there is a tiny pond with the golden color of the lanterns and sky. At the side of this pond, there is another cat resting on the stone walkway. This cat is placed subtly, merging with the soft shadows and gentle light. It is smaller than the other two and seems to be calmly watching its environment.

Not only three, there are many cats!

When you look closer, you can see many cats camouflaged into the background. The painter has incorporated clever detailing in the stone wall, roofs, and even in the positioning of the faraway houses, perhaps concealing feline forms within them. Smaller cat-shaped silhouettes appear to be sitting on stairs or strolling along the village streets. The painting encourages the viewer to look around, so that the experience becomes interactive.
