The Ayurvedic diet

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of holistic healing, and it focuses not only on what we eat but the food combinations too. According to Ayurvedic principles, certain food combinations should not be consumed as they can disturb digestion and create toxins (ama). In the long run, this can lead to imbalances in the body and even diseases. And so, some food combinations which might seem healthy in modern times, may actually disrupt your gut health and vitality, acccording to Ayurveds. So, here we list some food combinations which should be avoided at all cost for overall well-being, as per Ayurveda:

2/6

Milk with fruits

Smoothies-- which contain fruits, milk or yogurt-- are quite popular these days. However, Ayurveda warns against combining milk and fruits. Why? Because, while milk is cooling and heavy, fruits are sweet and slightly sour (read acidic)-- and this combination can slow down your digestion. Together, they disturb the body's digestive fire (agni), leading to bloating, sinus congestion, and toxin buildup. Over time, this combination can also lead to skin issues or respiratory problems. A hack to have smoothies is by replacing diary milk with almond milk.

3/6

Honey with hot water or hot milk

While honey, hot water, or milk are all good if consumed independently, in Ayurveda mixing honey with hot water or hot milk is a complete no-no. The reason: It is believed that when honey is cooked or its temperature is increased, it turns into poison, asper Ayurveda.

4/6

Ghee and honey in equal quantities together

Both ghee and honey are considered medicinal in Ayurveda. But when these are mixed in equal amounts they create a toxic reaction. Honey has a heating quality, while ghee is cooling, and their balance must be managed carefully. If consumed, this combination can produce ama and disturb one's digestion and metabolism. On the contrary, having ghee and honey together in unequal quantities is considered fine, and this is how they are used in many Ayurvedic formulations too.

5/6

Chicken or fish with milk

Milk, chicken and fish are all considered nourishing foods. But they should not be consumed together. The reason being that milk is cooling in nature, while chicken and fish are salting and heating. And so, when eaten together this combination can disrupt digestion and create toxins in the body. Over time, this combination can lead to skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis over time according to Ayurveda. This clash of energies confuses the digestive system, thus leading to ama (undigested residue). So, simply avoid having them together.

6/6

Fruits with water

According to Ayurveda, the ideal time to have fruits is in the morning, on an empty stomach and at least 30 minutes before or after a meal. That’s because fruits digest quickly, while other foods (especially grains, proteins, or dairy) take longer. Combining them causes fruit to ferment in the stomach, leading to gas, bloating, or indigestion. This can create toxins and interfere with nutrient absorption.
