9 myths around nutrients one should not believe

Myths often impact human health in irreversible ways

Understanding nutrition and health can be confusing due to widespread myths and misinformation. Accurate, evidence-based information is essential for making informed choices that support well-being. This aims to clarify common misconceptions, backed by insights and scientific research. By debunking myths and raising awareness about nutrients, readers can take timely, effective actions toward better health and prevention.

2/10

1. Thin equals healthy

Being thin does not automatically mean you’re healthy. Body mass index (BMI) is just one measure and doesn’t reflect overall health, which also depends on physical activity, diet quality, and mental well-being.

3/10

2. Detoxes and cleanses boost health

Detox diets and cleanses are not necessary and can be harmful. The body naturally removes toxins through the liver, kidneys, lungs, and skin. Eating a balanced, plant-based diet is far more effective than any cleanse.

4/10

3. Eating before bed causes weight gain

The timing of meals matters less than what you eat. Weight gain is about total calorie intake and food quality, not the clock. Eating healthy snacks before bed is fine if it fits your daily needs.

5/10

4. All fat is bad

Fat is essential for health. Unsaturated fats (like those in avocados, nuts, and olive oil) help absorb nutrients, support hormone production, and keep you full. Avoiding all fat can actually harm your health.

6/10

5. Raw vegetables are always better

Cooking can actually increase the availability of certain nutrients, like lycopene in tomatoes and carotenoids in carrots. Both raw and cooked vegetables have their place in a healthy diet.

7/10

6. Carbs are the enemy

Carbohydrates are not inherently bad. Whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are vital for energy and health. The problem is with refined carbs, not carbs as a whole.

8/10

7. Juice and smoothies are always healthy

Juices and smoothies can be high in sugar and low in fiber. Whole fruits are better because they provide more nutrients and less sugar. Be mindful of what goes into your blender.

9/10

8. Wild-caught seafood is always better

Both wild-caught and farmed seafood can be nutritious. The key is the type of fish, how it’s prepared, and the overall diet. Farmed fish can be just as healthy as wild-caught.

10/10

9. You need eight glasses of water a day

Water needs vary by person, activity, and climate. Harvard recommends about 15 cups for men and 11 for women, but this includes fluids from food and other drinks. Pale yellow urine and lack of thirst are good signs you’re hydrated.
