Weight loss: What's the ideal ketosis level for weight loss?

Following the Keto diet for weight loss?

The Keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that focuses on converting fat into fuel and entering ketosis, where you burn that fat as your primary energy source.

Depending on the diet you follow, and the efforts you put in, following a Ketogenic diet can show results fast. But what remains important is to achieve an ideal ketosis level, which would not just help burn fat, but also fulfil other health goals.

We tell you the ideal ketosis level and best ways to achieve that

2/6

How long does it take for the body to reach ketosis?

If you are following a disciplined version of a low-carb, high-fat diet, the body can start to use carbs as the primary energy source. It can be achieved through multiple means. On an average, ketosis can be reached anywhere between two days to a week and start showing results.

Once the carbs are burned, the body then uses the stored fat to burn energy.

3/6

What's the ideal ketosis level? Why is tracking ketosis so important?

Blood ketone levels, which determine your ideal ketosis state are said to range from 0.5-3.0 mg/dL. This is considered to be the optimum stage wherein our bodies utilize stored nutrients most effectively and also promote weight loss.

Tracking ketone (or ketosis) levels are also crucial because they can act as a non-scale marker related to weight loss. Measuring your ketones can tell you how effective your diet is, and also point out if any changes are needed so that fat burning can be accelerated.

That being said, the ketosis levels could greatly differ based on the food choices you make and the lifestyle you follow.

4/6

How to achieve maximum ketone levels in the body

Hitting the ideal ketosis level can determine how soon you can start burning fat, promote weight loss and fulfil other health goals. While it's important to pay attention to your nutrient intake on Keto, what's most crucial is restricting your carb intake, and concentrate on having good fats.

To put it simply, while you follow Keto, try to keep your carb intake to 50 grams per day, or stick to 25 grams of net carbs. This is essential to shift the body to start producing ketones on it (by burning through your glycogen reserves). Once achieved, the body then starts depending on fats for ketones.

Some people also tend to rely on external ketone supplements, which are said to reduce appetite and carb dependency. However, it's unresearched as to how safe they are, or how well they help achieve weight loss.

5/6

Are there ways to measure it?

While achieving ketosis is a sure-shot way to start mapping your weight loss goals, there are also diagnostic tools to measure ketone levels in the body. Blood ketone levels, one such tool, help measure the level of beta-hydroxybutyrate, the most common type of blood ketone marker found in the body. The readings of the same, are, however, said to be dependent on the quantity, and quality of food last had.

Apart from this, urine test strips, breath check tests are also workable, but less-accurate means to check for weight loss and ketosis.

6/6

The bottom line

Maintaining these optimum ketone levels will also help one achieve a leaner figure, and burn fat.

Do remember that the Ketogenic diet may be far from being fully holistic and has its share of pros and cons. However, if your goal is to lose weight quickly, trying Keto can definitely help and for that, entering Ketosis is super important.

If you suffer from diabetes, be careful to watch ketone levels very closely. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can happen if the ketone levels are too high, or the body becomes too acidic. This can happen when insulin levels are disrupted.
