Early signs of kidney problems: 6 symptoms one should never ignore

Kidneys are among the hardest-working organs in the body and daily, they filter close to 150 Liters of blood, eliminate waste, regulate electrolytes, and manage blood pressure. But they remain silent until something begins to malfunction. An unhealthy diet, lack of fluids, high salt consumption, and unmanaged high blood pressure quietly tax these sensitive organs and kidney stress doesn't usually have any major symptoms, early on, but the body sends very early warning signs that should not be ignored. It is imperative to remember, that if any of the below-mentioned conditions continue to cause one problems, they should be consulted with the doctor immediately

2/11

Chronic fatigue and low endurance

If the kidneys are not functioning normally, the waste and toxins begin to accumulate in the blood stream, hindering the clean blood from reaching the body's organs and also impairing the level of oxygen that the body is receiving, causing one to constantly feel tired and lacking in energy. After sleeping the whole night through, the body will still be tired. This is not only due to exhaustion but also due to the fact that kidneys are not able to sweep away waste, so the person feels overall heavy and not vital. As stated in a research published in the National Institute of Health, Fatigue is one of the most common and challenging symptoms seen in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), often appearing as early as stage 2. Its causes are complex and can include anemia, poor oxygen delivery, metabolic acidosis, depression, and sleep disorders.

3/11

Ankle, foot, or periorbital swelling

Puffiness or swelling is one of the more visible indications of kidney stress, particularly in the lower legs or the area around the eyes. Kidneys control the fluid balance of the body when kidneys are healthy but, when stressed, excess sodium and water are retained in the tissues. Water retention, causing puffy eyelids or ankles that continue throughout the day are warning signs that fluid retention is taking place due to kidneys not functioning normally. The National Kidney Foundation, mentions all the symptoms of Chornic kidney disease, of which, nephro swelling is one.

4/11

Changes in urinating patterns

Any measurable alteration in color, frequency, or quantity of urine can be an indicator that the kidneys are under stress. Frothing or foaming of the urine suggests potential protein spillage, and dark or decreased volume of urine suggests dehydration or waste build-up. Production of high volumes of urine during night or painful urination is also a symptom of damaged kidneys. These are fine but important initial warning signs that filtration is being jeopardized.

5/11

High blood pressure

Blood pressure and kidney health go together. When the kidneys are under stress, they can no longer regulate water and salt, and this is one of the factors that can lead to increased blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood pressure at the same time damages the kidneys' blood vessels, thereby forming a vicious circle. If blood pressure levels are still high even with medication or behavioral change, the kidneys may already be under unnecessary stress.

6/11

Muscle spasms and mineral imbalance

When the kidney's cannot keep the essential minerals such as calcium, potassium and sodium under balance, it can lead to muscle cramps, general weakness or twitching. Gradually, these minimal imbalances build up as the kidney function declines. Most people start noticing the cramps, at night, or even while resting, making this a sign that the body's fluid and mineral balance is off
Study published in National Institute of health says that Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is very common in people with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). It's often found alongside other typical symptoms of chronic uraemia (a buildup of waste in the blood due to poor kidney function)

7/11

Metallic taste, nausea, or loss of appetite

With rising concentrations of toxins with ineffective filtration by the kidneys, digestion is affected. A long-term metallic mouth taste, nausea, or decreased appetite may result. Food is also unpalatable to the taste, and a feeling of fullness immediately develops. This results from increasing blood concentrations of urea interfering with usual digestive function and damaging taste. Study published in the National Institute of Health suggests that it has revealed a high prevalence of taste dysfunction among CKD patients and the taste dysfunction is not specific for a particular taste modality.

8/11

Additional advice for kidney health

Alongside monitoring symptoms, maintaining a kidney-friendly lifestyle can help reduce stress on these vital organs. This includes staying well-hydrated, limiting excessive salt and processed food intake, managing blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and engaging in regular physical activity. Routine check-ups with a healthcare professional, especially for those with risk factors like diabetes or hypertension, can ensure early detection and prevent the progression of kidney disease.

Additionally, incorporating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can support overall kidney health. Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption further protects kidney function. Educating oneself about kidney-friendly foods and medications is also crucial. With consistent care and informed choices, individuals can maintain optimal kidney performance and long-term health.

Disclaimer

Always consult a medical health professional before adopting any advice. If any issue or symptoms persist, do not hesitate to get a checkup

Diet can also help with kidney issues

For kidney disease, a kidney-friendly diet typically includes:

  • Low sodium: To reduce blood pressure and fluid retention.

  • Controlled protein intake: Moderate protein helps reduce kidney workload.

  • Limited potassium and phosphorus: To prevent buildup in the blood.

  • Plenty of fluids: Unless otherwise advised by a doctor.

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables: Low in potassium varieties are preferred.

  • Whole grains: In moderation, depending on potassium and phosphorus levels.

  • Avoid processed and high-salt foods: Such as canned, fast foods, and salty snacks.

Always tailor dietary choices based on the stage of kidney disease and doctor or dietitian recommendations.

11/11

Keep your kidneys healthy

Keep your kidneys healthy by keeping yourself hydrated and consuming healthy food
