How Samantha balances fitness with autoimmune myositis: A lesson in resilience

When Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu announced in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with Myositis, a rare autoimmune disease affecting muscles, many were unsure if she would bounce back. What followed, however, was a journey of grit, discipline and transformation. Today, she stands as a symbol of resilience, using fitness not just to heal, but to redefine strength. Here we take a look at how Samantha’s workout routine looks and why it matters.

What Samantha’s current fitness routine looks like

After her diagnosis, Samantha took a break from acting for months. In many interviews she shared, “some days getting out of bed was hard”. Apart from functional medicine, her treatment included customized physiotherapy. Despite dealing with an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation and muscle weakness, she has steadily rebuilt her strength.

In a conversation with Nutrition coach Ryan Fernando, Samantha shared how weight training changed her life. In the podcast she shared her workouts 5 to 6 days a week and mornings are her personal favorite, as it “sets up the mood for the day”.

On social media, Samantha’s fitness routine doesn’t give off the image of an easy journey. From barbell squats to deadlifts, Samantha trains with a level of intensity that reflects both discipline and determination. In many of her posts, she highlights the importance of form, controlled movements and progressive loading.

Resistance exercise

Samantha shared videos of herself performing deadlifts, progressing to 100kg. She also does shoulder presses and other upper-body resistance exercises, focusing on shoulders, back and arms. In a powerful workout picture, the actor flaunted her sculpted back, which can be credited to her core-targeting moves and controlled exercises.
To maintain flexibility and joint health, beyond heavy lifting, she incorporates stretching, mobility drills, sometimes visible via rowing-machine–based stretches. Samantha mixes strength work with lighter, more playful or dynamic movement.

A dive into Samantha’s everyday diet

In the podcast with nutritionist Ryan, Samantha says, it’s about finding what does not work for you and eliminating it from your diet. “My diet is strict,” says Samantha.
The six things Samantha always has in her kitchen are:
Cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli etc.)
CeleryAcai berry
Turmeric
Ghee
Cold-pressed oils

Samantha’s approach combines anti-inflammatory foods, high-quality protein, and balanced macros to fuel recovery and sustain energy.
In a conversation with Dubai-based nutritionist Rashi Chowdhary, Smantha revealed that she consumes around 100 grams of protein each day. While Samantha’s protein intake falls under the “Celebrity regimen”, it also underscores the importance of protein in maintaining overall health and fitness.

Samantha's mindful approach to physical health

Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s fitness journey after her Myositis diagnosis demonstrates the importance of a structured, gradual, and mindful approach to physical health. By combining strength training, mobility exercises, and functional movements with a nutrient-rich diet and adequate recovery, she has steadily rebuilt her muscle strength and overall fitness. Progressive training, attention to form, balanced nutrition, and rest. Samantha’s experience illustrates that rebuilding strength and maintaining health often requires patience, consistency, and a holistic approach that integrates both exercise and lifestyle choices.
