From slow healing wounds to high fasting blood sugar: 5 signs you are becoming diabetic

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the way your body deals with blood sugar, otherwise known as glucose, the major source of energy for our cells. Being aware of early warning signs can help detect diabetes before serious complications arise. According to WHO, the number of people living with diabetes rose from 200 million in 1990 to 830 million in 2022, and this number keeps on increasing. Below are five critical symptoms that signify you might be developing diabetes, supported by scientific research and clinical insight.

2/6

Slow healing wounds: Silent alarm

One of the less obvious but clinically significant symptoms of diabetes involves slow-healing wounds. High blood sugar levels can damage blood vessels, reducing oxygen and nutrient supply to tissues. This impaired circulation hinders your body's natural ability to heal injuries or infections in due time. According to research published by the National Institute of Health, elevated glucose impairs the function of white blood cells critical to fighting infection and repairing wounds. Chronic hyperglycemia promotes inflammation that further delays tissue repair.

Clinically, slow-healing wounds generally first occur on the feet or legs. Due to loss of sensation resulting from neuropathy, an individual may not be aware of injury until it becomes more serious. Infections from untreated wounds can eventually lead to amputations in advanced disease states. Any nonhealing wound warrants an examination for diabetes if other risk factors, such as obesity or family history, exist. Additionally, poor circulation, weakened immunity, and high blood glucose levels can further delay healing and increase the risk of complications. Early detection, proper foot care, and regular medical checkups are essential to prevent severe outcomes and maintain overall health.

3/6

High fasting blood sugar levels

High fasting blood sugar levels can signal early changes in glucose control. Normal levels are usually below 100 mg/dL, while 100–125 mg/dL indicates prediabetes and 126 mg/dL or more suggests diabetes. Although one high reading may be temporary, repeated elevations should be checked by a healthcare professional.

4/6

Frequent urination with excessive thirst

Polydipsia, or excessive thirst, and polyuria, or frequent urination, are classic early signs of diabetes that are related to how the body attempts to regulate excess blood sugar. As blood sugar levels rise, kidneys filter more glucose from the bloodstream, but they can only reabsorb so much before glucose spills into urine, drawing water along with it through osmosis.

According to Ministry of Ayush, Polyuria can be a symptom of undiagnosed diabetes, pre- diabetes, or both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. This cycle makes one feel dehydrated unless extra fluids are taken in. If you find yourself urinating more often than usual or if you feel thirsty even after drinking water more regularly than you normally would, it may call for a fasting blood sugar test.

5/6

Chronic fatigue: Energy crisis at cellular level

At the cellular level, diabetes disrupts the role of insulin in facilitating glucose entry into the cells, leading to ineffective energy production. This persistent energy shortage is manifested as fatigue. Unlike normal tiredness relieved by rest, diabetic fatigue can feel overwhelming and continuous.

One study reported in the Journal of diabetes, identified that fatigue in diabetes is related to metabolic imbalance and oxidative stress due to chronic hyperglycemia. Insulin resistance further affects the metabolism of muscles, adding to feelings of weakness and lethargy. The recognition of this symptom is important because lifestyle changes and treatment adjustments can improve energy levels remarkably.

6/6

Numbness and tingling in extremities: Signs of nerve damage

Diabetic neuropathy results from damage to the nerves due to prolonged periods of high blood sugar levels. In most instances, this begins with peripheral nerves in the extremities, usually manifesting with tingling, burning sensations, numbness, or pain in feet and hands. According to studies diabetes Journal and statement from American Diabetes association, neuropathy may develop even at prediabetic stages and worsen with no intervention.

Nerve damage is the primary cause of discomfort, but it also increases the risk of unnoticed injuries that lead to infection, furthering the complication cycle. Early treatment through the control of blood sugar and medications can slow the progression of neuropathy.
