Are you a 20, 30, 40 or 50 year old and think you are done working and just want to chill? Well, this woman who has crossed her 100th birthday, thinks differently.

Jayne Burns, who turned 101 on July 26, drives herself four times a week to her job as a part-time fabric cutter. Her workplace is 20 minutes from her house. Would you too like to age gracefully like Burns and live a long, happy and healthy life? Here are some of her secrets to longevity, quoted by Express UK.

Kept working after trying retirement

It's not like Burns never took retirement. She tried to retire several times throughout her 70s and 80s. However, she keeps returning to her job because she misses the routine.

Love for her work

Burns has been working at a shop called Joann Fabric and Crafts store for 26 years now. She claims the shop is where she enjoys spending most of her time.

“I enjoy what I do, so I want to keep doing it,” the centenarian told CNBC. “I’ll work for as long as I can or as long as they’ll have me.”

Working and social connections

While there could be many factors helping one live a long life, Burns claims that “working has helped” her achieve longevity.

The second factor helping her live long is forging genuine and healthy relationships with her co-workers and other people in her surroundings, she explained.

“I enjoy talking to everybody I work with, and meeting the customers who are very nice,” said Burns. “Even if some of them are surprised to see me at the cutting table”.

Impact of positive relationships at work

Since we spend a lot of our time at work, the environment at your workplace can have a big impact on your health.

It is important to be at a place where you do not end up absorbing too much stress. Chronic stress is a precursor for chronic and inflammatory diseases and has consistently correlated with shorter lifespans in studies. According to an 85-year study from Harvard, positive relationships at work lead to lower stress levels, which may help in promoting longevity.

“It’s important to find people who are friendly and kind,” adds Burns.

Netizens are in awe

Burns gained a lot of traction on social media in 2021 when a co-worker in her 20s started posting videos of them at the store.

Many netizens are in awe of Burns and praise the centenarian for her refreshing outlook on life.
