For the family of Jace Watkins, it is a painful loss. The 11 year old died due to severe flu complications. “Jace never even got to open his Christmas gifts ... What do we even do now?," his aunt wrote on Facebook.
"Jace Watkins, 11, died Saturday night, a week after he was hospitalized in the intensive care unit at Children’s of Alabama. Diagnosed with the flu, he began having seizures, and, at one point, stopped breathing," Fox8 reported. He was suffering from brain swelling which prevented sufficient oxygen to reach his brain.
“He was a premature baby, but other than that, he’s had inhalers and stuff, but that’s been years ago. He was telling everybody he was fine, he felt fine. And then, I guess he started throwing up that night and had a seizure,” the 5th grader's aunt, Sabrina Parsons told the media.
Severe flu complications
Flu might seem like just a bad cold with a runny nose, fever, body aches, but sometimes it can take a nasty turn. Most people recover in a week or two, but for some, the flu can lead to serious complications that land them in the hospital.
One of the biggies is pneumonia. The flu virus can weaken your lungs, making it easier for bacteria to sneak in and cause a full-blown lung infection. This is especially risky for older adults, young kids, and people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease. Breathing becomes tough, coughs get worse, and suddenly that “just a flu” situation is serious.
Then there’s the risk to the heart too. Flu can trigger inflammation that can put stress on the heart, sometimes leading to heart attacks or worsening heart failure in people with existing heart problems. And let’s not forget secondary infections, ear infections, sinus infections, or even sepsis if the infection spreads in the bloodstream.
People with weakened immune systems, think cancer patients, transplant recipients, or anyone on heavy medication, are more vulnerable to complications. Even young, healthy adults aren’t completely safe; severe flu can cause encephalitis (brain inflammation) or muscle breakdown in rare cases. Many of these complications can be prevented with a flu shot, proper hygiene, and early medical attention if symptoms spike. Don’t shrug off high fever, shortness of breath, or extreme fatigue.
