Habits that we should adopt to avoid anemia

Anemia is a growing health concern, especially among women in India, with studies showing that 3 in 5 women are at risk. According to WHO, 30 per cent of women between the ages of 15-49 are anemic. The condition occurs when the body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells (RBCs) to carry oxygen efficiently, leading to fatigue, weakness, and other health complications. Iron deficiency is one of the leading causes, but there’s good news—simple morning habits can help improve RBC production naturally.

Adopting these seven morning habits can make a significant difference in maintaining optimal blood health and energy levels.

2/8

Start the day with a warm lemon and honey drink

Drinking warm lemon water with honey on an empty stomach is an excellent way to start the day. Vitamin C from lemon enhances the body's ability to absorb iron from plant-based foods, preventing deficiencies that can lead to anemia. This simple habit ensures that the iron consumed throughout the day is effectively utilised.

3/8

Have iron-rich breakfast options

A well-balanced breakfast plays a crucial role in red blood cell production. Including iron-rich foods such as spinach, beetroot, pomegranate, dates, and fortified cereals can significantly boost hemoglobin levels .Adding healthy fats like nuts and seeds further enhances iron absorption, ensuring better oxygen circulation in the body.

4/8

Get 10-15 minutes of morning sunlight

Sunlight is a natural source of Vitamin D, which plays a key role in iron metabolism and red blood cell production. A short walk or spending a few minutes in direct sunlight early in the morning helps the body synthesize vitamin D naturally, reducing the risk of anemia. Pairing this habit with light stretching or yoga can improve overall blood circulation.

The study by Redcliffe Labs indicates that three in five women are at risk of anaemia, making them three times more vulnerable than men, hence women need to pay more attention to these daily habits.

5/8

Drink beetroot and carrot juice

Beetroot and carrot juice is a powerfulnatural blood booster. Both vegetables are rich in iron, folate, and vitamin A, all essential for increasing hemoglobin levels. This nutrient-packed drink supports the formation of red blood cells and enhances oxygen supply, reducing symptoms of fatigue and weakness.

6/8

Eat a handful of soaked nuts and seeds

Soaked almonds, walnuts, sesame seeds, and flaxseeds are loaded with iron, copper, and folate—nutrients that promote RBC production. Soaking them overnight helps in better nutrient absorption, making them a great addition to a morning routine. These healthy fats and proteins also support better oxygen transport in the body.

7/8

Include more leafy vegetables in morning meals

Dark green leafy vegetables like moringa leaves, amaranth, spinach, and fenugreek are packed with iron and folic acid. Starting the day with a green smoothie or adding leafy greens to breakfast dishes helps improve hemoglobin levels naturally. Pairing these with vitamin C-rich foods, such as tomatoes or citrus fruits, enhances iron absorption.

8/8

Avoid tea and coffee right after breakfast

Many people have a habit of drinking tea or coffee immediately after meals, but caffeine inhibits iron absorption. Replacing these beverages with herbal teas like ginger or tulsi tea can prevent iron loss while still providing a warm and comforting drink in the morning.
