3 toxic bathroom products to get rid of immediately and why
One may not see it, but our bathrooms are hiding the most dangerous items, disguised as sanitary items, which we use daily. It is shocking to know that something as simple as a toothbrush could harm us in ways unimaginable. Yes, it is true.
Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a known gastroenterologist who keeps sharing his medical insights, came up with something sensational that links our hygiene, health, and body together. He talks about how certain bathroom items should be disposed off right away, as they pose a threat to our skin, body, and mouth.
He posted a video titled “3 toxic bathroom items you should throw away ASAP”, in this video, he highlighted three toxic items, captioned “Which of these items have you already eliminated from your home.” let us take a look at what is harming us, right in front of our eyes.
It can strongly undermine oral health to use an old toothbrush. In accordance with the article "Toothbrush wear concerning toothbrushing effectiveness" in the Journal of Dental Research, bristles that are worn are considerably less capable of removing plaque. The authors have discovered that splayed bristles correlate with increased levels of plaque, and hence, toothbrushes are less effective. Rather than waiting three months, the research recommends changing your toothbrush as soon as the bristles start to become frayed for the best oral health. Over 75% of individuals store toothbrushes longer than the suggested three months, although frayed bristles lose as much as 30% of their cleaning ability and may contain dangerous microbes.
Regular use of potent, alcohol-containing mouthwashes (such as chlorhexidine or Listerine) disrupts the delicate balance of healthy oral bacteria and creates dysbiosis and may encourage dangerous species associated with gum disease or infection. Worse: studies in animals reveal regular use can also change the gut microbiome, influencing metabolism and possibly lowering nutrient uptake. Dentists today recommend saving antimicrobial mouthwash for special dental guidance, not everyday use.
Dull razor blades can hurt your skin more than you realize. According to a 2020 MIT study titled "Why shaving dulls even the sharpest of razors", even soft human hair can create microscopic cracks in razor blades and make them dull very fast. These small fractures decrease cutting performance, causing tugging, irritation, and razor burn. Dermatologists caution that dull blades raise the likelihood of micro-cuts, ingrown hairs, and bacterial infections. To protect your skin and ensure a smooth shave, it’s best to replace your razor every 5–7 shaves or once it starts pulling.
