4 types of medications that should not be taken with Vitamin D supplements

The body needs Vitamin D to utilise calcium properly and maintain strong bones while strengthening its immune defenses. People who do not receive sufficient sunlight or dietary vitamin D, consume supplements to compensate for the deficiency. However, the combination of vitamin D with certain medications produces adverse reactions that affect treatment outcomes. Here are 4 types of medications that should not be taken with Vitamin D... 2/11

Orlistat

Orlistat is a popular weight loss treatment to help shed kilos. Orlistat works as a fat blocker, which stops your stomach and intestines from absorbing fats. The fat-soluble nature of Vitamin D requires absorption through fat, but Orlistat blocks this process which affects its absorption. Hence taking vitamin D supplements might not prevent the levels in your body from decreasing, because of Orlistat. Low vitamin D levels, then in turn, can result in negative effects on your bones and immune system. People who use Orlistat need to monitor their vitamin D levels due to this interaction.

Statins

Taken mostly by cardiac patients, Statins serve to prevent heart attacks and lower cholesterol levels. Atorvastatin and rosuvastatin represent two examples of statins. The liver enzyme cytochrome P450 3A4 breaks down both statins and vitamin D in the body. When your body uses the same liver enzyme for both statins and vitamin D, it creates a complicated combination that affects your body chemistry. This combination may result in elevated vitamin D levels or decreased statin levels, which could impact the effectiveness of your medication. The simultaneous use of these medications requires doctors to adjust treatment doses, while performing blood tests.

4/11

Steroids

Prednisone and similar steroid medicines treat inflammation in asthma patients, as well as those with arthritis and autoimmune conditions. Steroids decrease vitamin D concentrations in your body, by modifying vitamin D and calcium metabolism in your body. Steroid use lowers vitamin D which weakens bones and raises the chance of developing osteoporosis, which produces thin and fragile bones. Medical supervision is required for patients who take vitamin D supplements. Doctors closely monitor patients undergoing steroid treatment, to protect their bone health.

5/11

Thiazide diuretics

The medication group called thiazide diuretics functions as water pills, because they assist your body to remove excess salt and water through increased urine production. Doctors frequently use this medication to control both hypertension and swelling in patients. The two specific thiazide diuretics that exist are hydrochlorothiazide. and chlorthalidone. The human body absorbs calcium from food through the help of Vitamin D. The medication thiazide diuretics, increase blood calcium levels by minimising calcium excretion through urine. When these medications are used together, they result in elevated calcium levels which can create dangerous health complications. The patient requires regular blood tests to maintain proper calcium levels.
