Foot problems that should not be ignored

Our feet carry us through life, taking the brunt of our everyday tasks in silence most of the time. However, in spite of their constant assistance, they are vulnerable to a number of problems. Some small foot problems can be treated at home, while others require the doctor's immediate attention. So, here are five common foot issues that warrant a prompt doctor visit:

2/7

Sudden and severe pain

Dr. Tapish Sahu, Vascular Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, Dwarka says, "Foot pain is typical, but sudden, intense pain that doesn't subside is a cause for concern. In smokers, diabetics, hypertensives, people with high cholesterol, sudden, severe pain with sudden decrease of temperature with or without discoloration may mean blockage of the arterial blood. For sudden, severe foot pain especially in a patient with the above-mentioned risk factors, don't hesitate to seek immediate medical attention."
3/7

Diabetic foot ulcers

Due to nerve damage and poor blood circulation, foot problems are a common problem for diabetics. Otherwise, even minor cuts or blisters can develop into serious ulcers. Such things as redness, swelling, and fluid/pus seepage from a foot wound demand immediate medical attention, in particular for diabetic sufferers. Early intervention or proper medications can help prevent infections and possible amputations.

4/7

Sudden onset of calf pain, swelling and redness

Foot discomfort is not uncommon, but sudden onset of swelling in either calf or complete lower limb/s along with pain, especially after prolonged immobilization/hospitalization/long travel may be a symptom of blood clots in the leg veins, known as DVT in medical terms. If treatment is delayed, the clot can propagate or travel towards the heart through the bloodstream and cause severe complications. Immediate treatment in such situations can be very beneficial for the patients.

5/7

Blackish discoloration for toes and foot

Any minor injury to the foot in diabetics or smokers can turn into gangrene which may be gradually progressive. This usually is preceded by pain in the calf after walking for some distance, and gets relieved on taking rest. This claudication is a sign of decreased blood flow to the upper or lower limbs which is usually neglected and then a minor hurt / trauma to the foot / toes turns into gangrene which is recognized as gradually progressive blackish discoloration for which blood flow should be increased before removing the gangrenous part. If your calf hurt after walking for some time or the claudication appears to be getting worse with time, see a doctor who will discuss possible medical treatments; if severe, correct the blood flow in time, long term medications are suggested for most cases.

6/7

Sudden onset of weakness of lower limbs

If you have an acute onset of weakness and balance issues in one half of your body which may or may not be associated with slurring of speech/vision disturbances or even momentary unconsciousness, it may be a symptom of a small clot going through your diseased arteries supplying the brain. Early detection and treatment of the root cause is important to prevent further episodes or leading to serious complications.

7/7

The takeaway

Do not forget, your feet are your foundation. Looking after them is imperative for maintaining one's own mobility and being in good health. Don't disregard long-standing or worsening foot problems. If you get medical assistance quickly, you can prevent complications while keeping your foot pain-free and in good shape for a lifetime.
