5 daily habits that are secretly destroying the brain

Keeping the brain in good shape is crucial for your overall health and wellness. But do you know that some of your daily habits could be causing havoc on your brain health? Yes, some daily habits, which most of us think are harmless, are actually destroying the brain. These habits can lead to memory loss, cognitive decline, and even neurological diseases. Here’s what to watch out for and how to protect your mind.

2/6

Not exercising

Skipping the exercise is the worst idea. Yes, working out requires some effort, determination, and dedication. But exercise is not only beneficial for your physical health, but also for your mental health. Regular physical activity increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein that enhances memory and supports the formation of new synapses, and improves learning. Without it, your brain risks atrophy, shrinking critical regions over time. Aim to get at least a 150-minute brisk walk in a week for better brain health.

3/6

Not getting enough sleep

Binge-watching your favourite show or mindlessly doomscrolling through social media platforms at night, and not getting enough sleep, is a red flag. Quality sleep is non-negotiable for brain health. It's during this time, your brain forms pathways essential for learning and memory. Chronic sleep deprivation impairs concentration and reaction times. Sleep deprivation is also linked to neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s. Aim for 8-9 hours of sleep every night for better health.

4/6

Eating foods that cause inflammation

Yeah, we know it is so tempting to reach for those French fries or a cheeseburger. But it is time to think if they are doing any good to your health beyond that taste. What you eat directly impacts your brain. Fried and processed foods are high in sugars and unhealthy fats. They trigger chronic inflammation, which is tied to memory loss, mood swings, confusion, and depression. Such foods also increase the risk of neurological diseases. Instead, switch to a well-balanced and nutritious diet. You can try the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on lots of vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, nuts, whole grains, fatty fish, and virgin oil.

5/6

Spending too much time indoors

Being a couch potato occasionally is okay. However, spending excessive time indoors can affect your brain and overall health. Staying indoors limits sunlight exposure, which leads to a lack of vitamin D. Just 15 minutes of sunlight daily can lift your mood and protect your mind. Also, being indoors for an extended time can disrupt the circadian rhythms and lower serotonin levels. This can trigger seasonal affective disorder, depression, and mood imbalances. Step out in nature.

6/6

Chronic stress

Chronic stress silently kills the brain. We all get stressed once in a while. During this time, cortisol, also known as the ‘stress hormone’ gets released. While occasional stress doesn’t cause much distress, chronic stress can flood your system with the hormone cortisol. This impairs memory, attention, and cognitive function. It’s also linked to neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s. You can manage stress with mindfulness practices such as yoga, deep breathing, or therapy.
