5 Early Signs of Skin Cancer That Are Easy to Miss

Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer, and occurs when malignant (cancerous) cells form in the skin's tissues. The reason behind the cancer could be genetic, as well as over exposure to the sun (over years). Initially, skin cancer symptoms often present as benign skin problems, however, if left ignored, can turn into an aggressive stage. Like it is with all cancers, early detection makes a lot of difference, when treatment is possible, and chances of recovery are quite high. Let's take a look at some early signs of cancer that go beyond minor skin changes...

2/6

Scaly, Wart-Like Patches

The initial sign of basal cell carcinoma skin cancer, appears as rough scaly patches on the skin. The patches may resemble dry skin or warts, and display brown or red or skin-tone characteristics. These abnormal patches don't go away with lotions and creams, while feeling rough or crusty texture to the touch. Such lesions most commonly develop on parts of the body that receive sunlight exposure, like the face and neck and hands. People typically dismiss these warning signs, but they potentially indicate cancer development.

3/6

Persistent Itchy or Irritated Areas

When you have skin irritation or eczema-like symptoms that do not improve with standard treatments, it could be an early indicator of skin cancer. In this, small red skin patches develop, which fail to heal, or show any improvement. When your immune system detects cancer cells under the skin surface, they cause inflammation and skin sensitivity, and do not respond to standard creams or medicines. To confirm a diagnosis, this spot is monitored for weeks.

4/6

Shiny, Pearly Bumps

Basal cell carcinoma often manifests through small shiny bumps on the skin which are difficult to detect. Such bumps display a pearly or translucent appearance, which resembles small pearls, or drops of wax. You can spot tiny blood vessels through these bumps, which present as pink, red, blue or brown in color. The most common places where these bumps emerge include sun-exposed regions of the nose, ears and forehead. People may often ignore these small painless bumps, because they resemble normal skin blemishes.

5/6

Sores That Don’t Heal (or Keep Coming Back)

Unhealed skin sores which persist, or repeatedly appear constitute a typical, yet frequently undetected symptom of skin cancer. The sores may bleed while they ooze and form crust, but they will never disappear completely. These skin lesions heal briefly before returning once more. Squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas, both cause these long-lasting skin lesions. You should consult a dermatologist when a skin sore persists beyond a few weeks, particularly when located in areas that receive sunlight.

Changes in Moles: Size, Shape, or Color

Moles that change shape, size and color are warning indicators for melanoma, known as the deadliest form of skin cancer. The warning indicators of these changes can be delicate enough to go unnoticed. However, keep these changes in mind:

When asymmetry occurs in moles, the left and right halves become different from each other.

The border lines of these moles appear irregular or blurry to the eye.

The moles display various colors and contain multiple colors within their structure.

Moles that reach 6mm in diameter match the size of a standard pencil eraser.

The lesions evolve through the process of growth, while also bleeding and itching.

Any sudden appearance of a new mole requires medical evaluation. The ABCDE rule functions as a memory aid, to identify skin cancer signs through asymmetry, border irregularity, color variation, diameter exceeding 6mm, and evolution or time-dependent changes.
