5 early signs of Ovarian Cancer that are easy to miss

Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the ovaries, which are part of the female reproductive system. It's characterised by the abnormal growth of cells that can form tumors. The early indicators of ovarian cancer tend to be faint, and resemble other benign conditions, which leads to delayed detection of the condition. Knowledge of these early warning signs enables medical detection at the earliest, which leads to a better prognosis, and survival rate. Here are 5 signs of ovarian cancer one should not ignore...

2/9

Persistent Bloating and Abdominal Swelling

Bloating is a common symptom that occurs to almost all of us, but ovarian cancer produces belly swelling, which is consistent. The abdominal sensation of fullness or pressure persists throughout weeks, while your belly size becomes more noticeable. Unusual bloating that persists continuously, and becomes worse throughout time, is different from typical menstrual bloating and diet-related bloating. This happens because the abdomen expands because of ovarian tumors along with fluid accumulation, forcing organs to bulge outward. A doctor must be consulted if your abdomen stays swollen or feels fuller than usual, for more than a few weeks.

3/9

Feeling Full Quickly or Loss of Appetite

One of the early signs of ovarian cancer can manifest as early satiety, and unexpected loss of hunger. The early feeling of fullness makes it challenging to finish regular meals, which results in unintentional weight reduction. This happens because the expanding tumor and abdominal fluid accumulation cause stomach compression that reduces your ability to consume even small amounts of food. Consult a doctor if you are having trouble eating normally, or if you become full quickly.

4/9

Pelvic or Abdominal Pain and Pressure

Ovarian cancer typically causes pain or discomfort in the lower belly and pelvic region of women. The discomfort exists as a dull sensation, or persistent cramps or period-like pain. The discomfort sends pain signals which move toward the lower part of the back. This pain shows no resemblance to typical menstrual cramps or stomach discomfort, because it persists continuously and intensifies gradually. The tumor development causes nerves tissues and organs surrounding the pelvis and abdomen to experience pressure, because of the tumor growth. Seek medical attention for any new, or unusual pelvic or abdominal pain, which persists for weeks.

5/9

Changes in Bladder or Bowel Habits

Ovarian cancer leads to modifications in both bladder and bowel functions. The sensation of needing to urinate becomes more frequent, and you might experience a quick need to urinate before passing only a small amount of urine. Some women experience constipation or diarrhea that differs from their usual bowel movements. This occurs because ovarian tumors and fluid accumulation in the abdomen create pressure points that disrupt bladder and intestinal operations. You should consult your doctor if you experience ongoing bladder pressure and recurring urination together with constipation, that persists beyond two weeks.

6/9

Unexplained Fatigue and Weight Changes

Continuous unexplained tiredness serves as an important warning sign of ovarian cancer. Fatigue caused by ovarian cancer remains persistent, and fails to respond to rest. Daily activities become challenging because of this tiredness, which negatively impacts your overall quality of life. Weight fluctuations can occur alongside fatigue as a symptom, while some women experience weight gain instead of weight loss. This happens because cancer impacts the body's metabolism, and leads to changes in appetite which cause weight modifications.

7/9

Other Possible Early Symptoms

Pain during sex

Abnormal vaginal bleeding, especially after menopause

Indigestion, nausea, or upset stomach

New or ongoing back pain that has appeared
