5 early symptoms of Thyroid Cancer that are easy to miss

Thyroid Cancer occurs when malignant cells form in the tissues of the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck. If detected early, it is usually treatable. The gland produces hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight. Even though thyroid cancer is relatively rare, there has been a recent rise in the number of cases. The condition can occur at any age, but it's most commonly diagnosed in women between 30 and 60 years old. While only a biopsy can confirm a diagnosis, here are 5 early symptoms of Thyroid Cancer that are easy to miss...

2/7

Small lump or swelling in the neck

One of the earliest signs of thyroid cancer is a lump or swelling in the front lower part of the neck. However, this lump is often painless (like all cancer lumps most of the time) and grows slowly, so it may go unnoticed for a long time (even years) The lump may feel firmer and is usually not squishy and immovable than the surrounding tissue and can sometimes be felt by simply touching the neck. Many people ignore it because it doesn’t cause pain or discomfort initially. Because lumps can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions like cysts or goiters, people often delay seeing a doctor. But any new or growing lump in the neck should be checked by a healthcare professional.

3/7

Hoarseness in voice

Thyroid cancer can affect the nerves that control the vocal cords, leading to hoarseness or a change in voice. This symptom is easy to miss because it might be mistaken for a common cold, allergies, or voice strain. If your voice becomes hoarse and does not improve after a few weeks, it is important to get it evaluated. Persistent hoarseness can be a sign that a tumor is pressing on the nerves near the thyroid. Unlike a temporary sore throat, hoarseness caused by thyroid cancer tends to last longer and does not respond to usual treatments.

4/7

Difficulty swallowing or breathing

As the tumor grows, it may press against the esophagus (the tube that carries food to the stomach) or the windpipe. This pressure can cause difficulty swallowing or a feeling that something is stuck in the throat. Breathing problems can also occur if the tumor presses on the windpipe, causing shortness of breath or noisy breathing. These symptoms are often mistaken for acid reflux, infections, or allergies. Because they develop slowly, many people do not realize they could be related to thyroid cancer.

5/7

Persistent neck or throat pain

Pain in the front of the neck or throat that does not go away can be a subtle symptom of thyroid cancer. This pain may sometimes spread to the ears. Because neck and throat pain are common and usually linked to infections or muscle strain, people often ignore this symptom. However, if the pain is persistent and not related to a cold or other obvious cause, it should be checked by a healthcare provider.

6/7

Unexplained weight loss and fatigue

In advanced cases, thyroid cancer can cause symptoms beyond the neck. Unexplained weight loss and constant tiredness or fatigue are signs that the cancer might have spread or is affecting the body’s metabolism. These symptoms are easy to miss because they can be caused by many other health issues, such as stress, infections, or other illnesses. If you lose weight without trying or feel unusually weak for a long time, it is important to get medical advice.
Early detection allows for treatments like surgery, radioactive iodine therapy, and hormone replacement to be more successful.
