5 symptoms of a damaged liver due to Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body is unable to regulate blood sugar levels due to insufficient insulin production or the body's inability to use insulin effectively. Usually chronic and lifelong, diabetes, though not curable can be managed through medicines, diet and exercise, however, if left uncontrolled can affect each and every organ of your body, including liver, kidney and even eye sight. Here are 5 symptoms of a damaged liver due to Diabetes. Look out for these, and get medical help as soon as possible..

2/13

Unusual fatigue

We all feel a little tired at the end of a long day. However, if you are constantly feeling fatigued, then it could be one of the earliest signs of liver damage. When your liver is damaged, it cannot filter toxins properly from your blood. These toxins build up and make you feel exhausted even after resting. People with diabetes often experience fatigue because their liver struggles to manage the extra stress caused by high blood sugar and fat deposits.

If you notice persistent tiredness that doesn’t improve with sleep, it could be a sign your liver is not working well.

3/13

Yellowing of Skin and Eyes

Jaundice is one of the most obvious signs of liver trouble. It happens when bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced during the breakdown of red blood cells, builds up in your body. A healthy liver processes and removes bilirubin, but a damaged liver cannot do this efficiently.

This causes your skin and the whites of your eyes to turn yellow. People with diabetes who develop jaundice should seek medical attention immediately, as it indicates serious liver dysfunction. However, it needs to be kept in mind that diabetes is not the only reason for jaundice and can occur in non diabetic people too, even infants.

4/13

Abdominal Pain and Swelling

Pain or discomfort in the right side of your belly, where the liver is located, can be a symptom of liver damage. The liver may become inflamed or enlarged due to fat buildup or scarring, causing a dull or sharp pain.

In advanced stages, fluid can accumulate in the abdomen, causing swelling or bloating. This swelling is called ascites and is a sign of severe liver damage or cirrhosis.

5/13

Stay stress free

Staying stress free though not directly related, can also harm your liver

6/13

Dark urine and pale stools

Changes in urine and stool color are important signs of liver problems. When the liver is damaged, bilirubin leaks into the bloodstream and is excreted in urine, making it darker than usual—brown, orange, or amber.

At the same time, the liver may produce less bile, which normally gives stool its brown color. This can cause pale or clay-colored stools. Both these changes can indicate that your liver is not functioning properly.

7/13

Loss of Appetite and Unexplained Weight Loss

A damaged liver affects digestion and metabolism, leading to loss of appetite. You may feel nauseous or full quickly, which reduces your food intake. Over time, this can cause unexplained weight loss and muscle weakness. In diabetes, this is especially concerning because poor nutrition can worsen blood sugar control and overall health. Because of this, your weight too can reduce drastically, leading to weakness and fatigue. You might also get tired even with the most simple of exercises, and find yourself getting out of breath.

8/13

How dangerous is diabetes?

Diabetes is a serious and potentially life-threatening chronic condition that, if not properly managed, can lead to a cascade of severe health complications throughout the body. Persistently high blood sugar levels damage blood vessels and nerves over time, significantly increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and peripheral artery disease. It is a leading cause of kidney failure, often requiring dialysis or a transplant, and can cause diabetic retinopathy, potentially leading to blindness. Nerve damage (neuropathy) can result in pain, numbness, and dangerous foot ulcers that may necessitate amputation, while it can also affect digestion, sexual function, and bladder control.

9/13

How to reverse the damage done to the liver?

The liver possesses a remarkable capacity for regeneration and repair, and in many cases, damage can be reversed, especially if caught in its early stages. The primary strategy for reversing liver damage involves eliminating or significantly reducing the cause of the injury. For instance, in cases of alcoholic fatty liver disease, complete abstinence from alcohol is crucial. For non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is often linked to obesity and unhealthy eating, significant lifestyle modifications are key: gradual weight loss through a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats (like those found in olive oil and fish), along with regular physical activity, can dramatically reduce liver fat and inflammation.

10/13

Diet

Eat food that's good for liver, such as garlic, grapefruit, beetroot, green tea, olive oil, cruciferous vegetables, and avocados.

11/13

Take care of yourself

Taking care of yourself can have a host of benefits, leading to a healthy, happy you

12/13

Exercise

It is important to incorporate exercise into the routine. Moderate exercise of 150 minutes can help to maintain optimal health.

13/13

Talk to your doctor

If you notice these symptoms, talk to your doctor.
